How to Use

Dosage

For adults, typically 2000-2500 ml of solution four times a day, depending on body weight and kidney function.

Method

The solution is infused into your abdomen. Before use, mix the two chambers of the bag and warm the solution to body temperature. The solution stays in your abdomen for 2-10 hours before it's drained.

Important

The maximum daily dose is decided by your doctor; for continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) adults, it's typically up to 10,000 ml per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Peritonitis (inflammation of the abdominal lining), with symptoms like cloudy fluid drained from your abdomen, stomach pain, fever, nausea, or very rarely, blood poisoning.
  • Infection at the catheter exit site or along the tunnel under the skin, with symptoms like redness, swelling, pain, discharge, or hardening.
  • Abdominal hernia (a bulge in the abdominal wall).
  • Problems with the inflow or outflow of the dialysis solution.
  • Feeling of stretching or fullness in the abdomen.
  • Pain in the shoulders.
  • Low potassium levels in the blood.
  • High blood sugar levels.
  • High fat levels in the blood.
  • Weight gain.
RARE
  • Diarrhea.
  • Constipation.
  • Difficulty breathing caused by the diaphragm rising.
  • Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis, with possible symptoms of abdominal pain, bloating, or vomiting.
  • Excess calcium in the body if calcium intake is too high.
  • Decrease in body fluid levels, which can be seen as rapid weight loss.
  • Low blood pressure.
  • Fast heart rate.
  • Increase in body fluid levels, which can be seen as rapid weight gain.
  • Fluid in the tissues and lungs.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Breathing difficulties.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if your blood potassium is very low or blood calcium is very high.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have a severe electrolyte imbalance (salt imbalance) due to vomiting or diarrhea.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have peritonitis, which may show as cloudy fluid drained from your abdomen, stomach pain, fever, nausea, or rarely, blood poisoning.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have severe stomach pain, bloating, or vomiting, as these could be signs of a rare but serious complication called encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis.
  • Peritoneal dialysis should not be started if you have recent abdominal injury or surgery, severe burns, a bad skin infection, an abdominal infection, unhealed wounds, hernias, or abdominal tumors.
