How to Use

Dosage

The dose is individual, depending on the type of surgery, the area to be numbed, and the desired duration of numbness.

Method

This medicine is given only as an injection into the fluid around the spinal cord (intrathecal).

Important

The maximum dose for adults and children over 40 kg is 20 mg bupivacaine (4 ml of 5 mg/ml solution).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache after injection
  • Low blood pressure, slow heart rate
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Difficulty urinating, inability to control urination
RARE
  • Paralysis or muscle weakness
  • Tingling or numbness (sensation disturbances)
  • Back pain
  • Inflammation around the brain or spinal cord (meningitis, arachnoiditis)
  • Severe breathing and circulation problems (total spinal block)
  • Paralysis of both sides of the body, often in the lower body or legs
  • Heart rhythm problems or cardiac arrest
  • Slow and shallow breathing
  • Sudden skin itching or rash, swelling of face, lips, tongue, and throat, breathing difficulties, and a rapid drop in blood pressure due to a severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic shock), which can be life-threatening.
  • Peripheral nerve disease (neuropathy), Horner's syndrome

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to bupivacaine, other similar anesthetics, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you are going to be put to sleep with an intravenous injection.
  • Do not use if you have an infection in the area where the numbness will be given.
  • Do not use if you have blood clotting problems or are taking blood-thinning medicines by mouth.
  • Do not use if you have severe central nervous system diseases, problems with cerebrospinal fluid flow, meningitis (brain lining inflammation), blood poisoning (sepsis), bleeding in the skull or increased pressure inside the skull, brain tumors, narrowing of the spinal canal or nerve roots, spinal cord injuries or bleeding, spinal cord tumors, cancer that has spread (metastases) or infections, heart failure, low blood volume, or shock.

  • Bicain Pond Spinal should not be used in patients who cannot cooperate.
