How to Use

Dosage

Adults and children over 40 kg: Usually 1 tablet twice a day, or 1 tablet three times a day for stronger infections.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, just before or at the start of a meal. Take doses spaced out, with at least 4 hours between them. Do not take two doses within an hour. Do not use this medicine for more than 2 weeks.

Important

Maximum 3 tablets per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea (in adults).
  • Yeast infection (thrush).
  • Nausea (feeling sick), especially with high doses. If you feel sick, take Betaklav before meals.
  • Vomiting (throwing up).
  • Diarrhea (in children).
RARE
  • Skin rash and itching, including raised, itchy rash (hives).
  • Indigestion.
  • Dizziness.
  • Headache.
  • Increased levels of certain liver enzymes (seen in blood tests).
  • Skin rash that may form blisters and look like small targets (dark spot in the center with a paler area around it and a dark ring on the edge – erythema multiforme).
  • Bleeding or bruising more easily (due to low blood clotting cells).
  • Frequent infections (due to low white blood cells).
  • Serious allergic reactions: severe rash, fever, swelling of your face or throat which can make it hard to breathe, feeling faint, or chest pain (this can be a sign of a heart attack caused by allergy).
  • Severe gut inflammation (colitis) causing watery diarrhea, often with blood and mucus, stomach pain, and/or fever.
  • Acute pancreas inflammation (pancreatitis) causing severe and lasting stomach pain.
  • Drug-induced enterocolitis syndrome (DIES): mostly in children, with repeated vomiting (1-4 hours after taking the medicine), stomach pain, extreme tiredness, diarrhea, and low blood pressure.
  • Brain inflammation (meningitis).
  • Very severe skin reactions: widespread rash with skin peeling and blisters (like a bad sunburn), red rash with small pus-filled bumps, flu-like symptoms with rash and fever, or a red rash on specific body folds.
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis).
  • Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice), caused by too much bilirubin (a substance made by the liver) in your blood.
  • Kidney inflammation.
  • Hyperactivity.
  • Seizures (fits), especially in people taking high doses or with kidney problems.
  • Black, hairy tongue.
  • Significant drop in white blood cells (seen in blood tests).
  • Anemia (low red blood cells) causing tiredness, weakness, or pale skin.
  • Kidney damage from urine crystals (seen in urine tests).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to penicillin, amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, or any other part of this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have ever had a bad allergic reaction (like a rash or swelling in your face/neck) to other antibiotics.
  • Do not take if you have ever had liver problems or yellow skin while taking antibiotics.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have glandular fever, kidney or liver problems, or if you are not urinating regularly.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Increase the dosing interval in severe renal impairment. May potentiate the effect of methotrexate. (updated 6.11.2023)
