Betaklav is an antibiotic medication that kills bacteria causing infections, and it contains two active ingredients: amoxicillin and clavulanic acid.

How to Use

Dosage

For adults and children weighing 40 kg or more, the usual dose is one tablet three times a day.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water at the start of a meal or just before; take doses evenly throughout the day, with at least 4 hours between doses.

Important

Do not take more than one tablet in a single hour, meaning typically no more than three tablets per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea (loose stools)
  • Yeast infections (like in the vagina, mouth, or skin folds)
  • Nausea (feeling sick to your stomach), especially with high doses
  • Vomiting (throwing up)
RARE
  • Skin rash, itching, or raised, itchy rash (hives)
  • Indigestion (stomach upset)
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Severe skin reactions like a red rash with blisters that look like small targets (erythema multiforme), or widespread rash with blisters and peeling skin (Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Severe allergic reactions, including swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat which may cause breathing difficulties (angioedema), collapse, fever, joint pain, or swollen glands
  • Inflammation of the large bowel, causing watery diarrhea, often with blood and mucus, stomach pain, and/or fever
  • Acute inflammation of the pancreas (severe and persistent stomach pain)
  • Drug-induced enterocolitis syndrome (DIES), which mainly affects children and causes repeated vomiting, stomach pain, extreme tiredness, diarrhea, and low blood pressure
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis) or yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice)
  • Kidney inflammation or crystals in the urine that can lead to acute kidney damage
  • Seizures (convulsions), especially with high doses or kidney problems
  • Black, hairy-looking tongue
  • Hyperactivity (being overly active)
  • Blood clotting takes longer than usual

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Betaklav if you are allergic to amoxicillin, clavulanic acid, penicillin, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take Betaklav if you have ever had a severe allergic reaction (like a rash, swollen face or neck) to any other antibiotic.
  • Do not take Betaklav if you have ever had liver problems or yellowing of the skin (jaundice) after taking an antibiotic.
  • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Betaklav if you have glandular fever.
  • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Betaklav if you are being treated for liver or kidney problems.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A
