Betadine mouthwash, containing povidone-iodine, is a fast-acting antiseptic used to improve oral hygiene and relieve inflammation in the mouth and throat.

How to Use

Dosage

Rinse or gargle with 5–10 ml of diluted or undiluted mouthwash.

Method

Use for about half a minute at a time, 3–4 times a day. The product can be diluted by adding 2 parts water to 1 part Betadine solution. Do not swallow.

Important

Max 3–4 times daily (5–10 ml per use), and not continuously for more than two weeks without a doctor's instruction.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Allergic reactions (hypersensitivity)
  • Contact rash
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic reaction)
  • Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
  • Swelling of skin and mucous membranes (angioedema)
  • Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
  • Lung infection (pneumonia)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to iodine or any other ingredient in Betadine mouthwash.
  • Do not use if you have an overactive thyroid or another acute thyroid disease.
  • If your sore throat comes with high fever, headache, or nausea, contact a doctor immediately.
  • Stop use if you experience irritation, rash, or an allergic reaction.
  • Avoid use in newborns and small infants due to the high amount of iodine.

  • If you have goiter or thyroid nodules, large amounts of iodine could lead to an overactive thyroid.
  • Do not use before or after radioiodine imaging or radioiodine treatment for thyroid cancer.
  • If the mouthwash enters your lungs, it could cause lung inflammation.
  • During pregnancy and breastfeeding, use with caution and only for a few days, as advised by your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other medicines. Avoid using with antiseptics containing octenidine.
  • Do not use continuously for more than two weeks without a doctor's prescription.
