Dosage

Method

Apply a thin layer of Betadine solution to the affected skin area and let it dry. If needed, cover the area with a clean gauze or plaster. This solution is for external use only.

  • Overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
  • Swelling under the skin (angioedema)
  • Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
  • Imbalance of salts in the body (electrolyte imbalance)
  • Metabolic acidosis (too much acid in the body)
  • Acute kidney failure
  • Abnormal concentration of substances in the blood (abnormal blood osmolality)
  • Chemical skin burn
  • Lung inflammation (pneumonia), especially if the solution is aspirated into the lungs

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to iodine or any other ingredient in Betadine solution.
  • Do not use if you have an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) or any other acute thyroid disease.
  • If you have goiter or thyroid nodules, using large amounts of iodine might cause an overactive thyroid.
  • Newborns and small infants have a higher risk of an underactive thyroid if large amounts of iodine are used. Prevent the solution from entering an infant's mouth.
  • Prolonged exposure to the wet solution can cause skin irritation or severe skin reactions. Stop use if irritation, contact dermatitis, or hypersensitivity occurs.

  • Do not use before or after thyroid scans using radioiodine or radioiodine treatment for thyroid cancer.
  • If the solution gets into your windpipe or lungs, there is a risk of lung inflammation.
  • This solution is for external use only. Ingestion is dangerous; contact a doctor immediately if swallowed.
  • During pregnancy and breastfeeding, use only if absolutely necessary and in minimal amounts, as iodine crosses the placenta and enters breast milk, potentially affecting the fetus or newborn.
