Berinert is a medicine used to treat and prevent swelling caused by hereditary angioedema (HAE).

How to Use

Dosage

For acute attacks, 20 International Units (IU) per kilogram of body weight. For prevention before procedures: 1000 IU for adults and 15–30 IU per kilogram of body weight for children, given no more than 6 hours before the procedure.

Method

The solution is given slowly into a vein as an injection or infusion.

Important

No overdose cases have been reported. Dosage is determined by weight or procedure.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Increased risk of blood clots.
  • Fever and a tingling or burning sensation at the injection site.
  • Allergic reactions such as fast or irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, skin redness, rash, difficulty breathing, headache, dizziness, nausea, or vomiting.
  • In very rare cases, hypersensitivity reactions can lead to shock (a severe allergic condition).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Berinert if you are allergic to its active ingredient (C1-esterase inhibitor) or any other ingredient.
  • Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have had allergic reactions to Berinert or other medicines or foods before.
  • If you experience a severe allergic reaction (such as difficulty breathing or dizziness), the medicine administration must be stopped immediately.
  • If your larynx swells, you will need close monitoring and immediate emergency care.
  • Berinert must not be mixed with other medicines or liquids in the same syringe or infusion set.
