Method

A doctor or nurse will give you this medicine as an injection into a vein or muscle, or as a drip into a vein.

Important

Your doctor will ensure you receive a safe dose; very high doses can cause seizures.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Rash and eczema
  • Vein inflammation at the injection site (thrombophlebitis)
RARE
  • Hives (nettle rash)
  • Increase in a type of white blood cell (eosinophilia)
  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylactic reactions)
  • Low levels of white blood cells (agranulocytosis, leukopenia)
  • Low levels of red blood cells due to immune reaction (hemolytic anemia)
  • Diarrhea
  • Severe skin reactions with redness, fever, and pus-filled blisters (AGEP)
  • Measles-like rash or flat, red spots on the skin
  • Itching or inflamed skin (erythema)
  • Swelling of the skin, mucous membranes, and tissues under the skin, often in the face, mouth, or tongue (angioedema)
  • Low levels of platelets (thrombocytopenia)
  • Low levels of red blood cells (anemia)
  • Brain disorder with seizures and loss of consciousness (metabolic encephalopathy)
  • Herxheimer reaction (fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, low blood pressure, worsening skin lesions) during treatment for spirochete infections like syphilis

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to benzylpenicillin, other penicillins, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had a severe allergic reaction to other similar antibiotics (like cephalosporins or carbapenems).
  • Talk to your doctor if you have kidney problems, heart failure, are over 60 years old, or if this medicine is for a newborn baby.
  • If you are being treated for a spirochete infection (like syphilis), tell your doctor, as you might experience a temporary reaction called a Herxheimer reaction (fever, headache, muscle pain, low blood pressure, worsening skin rashes).
