Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Eczema and skin rash
  • Inflammation of a vein at the injection site (thrombophlebitis)
RARE
  • Hives (itchy red welts on the skin)
  • Increased number of a certain type of white blood cells (eosinophilia)
  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) like breathing difficulties, swelling of the face/throat, or rash
  • Lack of white blood cells (agranulocytosis)
  • Low red blood cell count (hemolytic anemia) related to the immune system
  • Low white blood cell count (leukopenia)
  • Diarrhea
  • Severe skin reactions with widespread redness, fever, and small pus-filled blisters (AGEP)
  • Flat, red skin rash (maculopapular rash)
  • Measles-like rash (morbilliform rash)
  • Itching
  • Inflammatory skin redness (erythema)
  • Swelling of the skin, mucous membranes, and tissues, usually in the face, mouth, or tongue (angioedema)
  • Low platelet count (thrombocytopenia)
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia)
  • Brain problems such as seizures or confusion (metabolic encephalopathy)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to penicillin, benzylpenicillin sodium, or any other ingredients in this medicine, or if you have had a severe allergic reaction to other similar antibiotics (like cephalosporins).
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, heart failure, are over 60 years old, or if this medicine is for a newborn.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had a mild allergic reaction to other similar antibiotics.
  • If you are being treated for a spirochete infection (like syphilis), you might get a Herxheimer reaction, causing fever, headache, muscle pain, low blood pressure, and worsening skin problems. Contact your doctor if this happens.
