How to Use

Method

A doctor or nurse will give this medicine to you as an injection into a vein, muscle, or as a drip infusion.

Important

The doctor will determine your maximum daily dose. Do not take more than prescribed.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Skin rash and eczema
  • Soreness and swelling of a vein where the injection was given
RARE
  • Itchy, raised bumps on the skin (hives)
  • Increased number of a certain type of white blood cell
  • Severe allergic reaction with symptoms like sudden rash, itching, swelling of face/lips/tongue, difficulty breathing, fever, joint pain, or swollen lymph nodes.
  • Low numbers of white blood cells (agranulocytosis, leukopenia) or red blood cells (anemia) or platelets (thrombocytopenia).
  • Loose stools or frequent bowel movements.
  • Severe skin reactions like widespread red skin, fever, pus-filled blisters, or measles-like rash.
  • Brain problems (encephalopathy) that can cause seizures or loss of consciousness.
  • Temporary reaction with sudden fever, headache, muscle pain, low blood pressure, and worsening skin lesions, especially when treating certain infections like syphilis.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to benzylpenicillin, any other ingredient in this medicine, or any penicillin.
  • Do not use this medicine if you have had a severe allergic reaction to other similar antibiotics (like cephalosporins or carbapenems) before.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems or heart failure.
  • Be careful if you are over 60 years old or if this medicine is for a newborn baby.
  • If you are being treated for a spirochete infection (like syphilis), you might get a temporary reaction called a Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction. Symptoms include sudden fever, headache, muscle pain, low blood pressure, and worsening skin rashes. Contact your doctor if this happens.
