How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will determine your specific dose based on your age, weight, and the type of infection.

Method

This medicine is given by a doctor or nurse as an injection into a muscle or a vein. If given into a vein, it can be a quick shot or a slow drip over 30-60 minutes.

Important

Your doctor will decide the maximum daily dose for you based on your specific needs and the severity of your infection.

Possible Side Effects

  • Changes in laboratory test results
RARE
  • Allergic reactions, including skin rash, hives, and severe reactions with difficulty breathing or swelling of face/tongue.
  • Severe skin reactions, such as rashes with fever, blisters, or flaky skin.
  • Fever.
  • Joint pain.
  • Inflammation of the mouth, tongue, or black hairy tongue.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Changes in body salts (electrolytes) if medicine is given too fast.
  • Nervous system problems like seizures (fits), especially with high doses or fast infusion, or in patients with kidney problems, epilepsy, or brain swelling.
  • Diarrhea (can be a sign of a serious gut inflammation, see warnings).
  • Kidney problems, such as protein or blood in urine, or reduced urine.
  • Serious local reactions at injection site for babies getting muscle injections.
  • Changes in blood cells (e.g., more certain white blood cells, less white or red blood cells, or problems with blood clotting).
  • Sudden widespread rash with small pus-filled bumps (AGEP).
  • Flat, red skin rash (maculopapular rash) or measles-like rash.
  • Itching or general skin redness.
  • Swelling of skin and mucous membranes (angioedema), usually in the face, mouth, or tongue.
  • Serum sickness (an allergic reaction with fever, swollen glands, and skin changes).
  • Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction (fever, chills, headache, muscle/joint pain, tiredness, weakness, skin redness) when treating certain infections.
  • Brain disorder with seizures and loss of consciousness (metabolic encephalopathy).
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis) or reduced bile flow.
  • Blistering skin disease (pemphigoid).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to penicillin or similar antibiotics.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had allergic reactions to medicines before (like rash, itching, fever, trouble breathing, low blood pressure). This medicine can cause a life-threatening allergic reaction.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems or severe imbalances in your body's salts (electrolytes).
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, as your dose might need to be changed.
  • Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy, fluid in the brain, or meningitis, as seizures might be more likely.

  • Tell your doctor if you have glandular fever (mononucleosis), certain types of blood cancer (lymphatic leukemia), or a fungal skin infection.
  • Tell your doctor if you take blood thinners, as your blood clotting might need to be checked.
  • Tell your doctor if you have diabetes.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a sexually transmitted disease, such as syphilis, as specific tests may be needed.
  • Seek medical help immediately if you get severe, lasting diarrhea during treatment, as it could be a serious bowel inflammation.
  • For babies, injections into a vein are preferred over muscle injections to avoid severe local reactions.
  • If the medicine is given too quickly through a vein, it can cause seizures.
