How to Use

Dosage

For adults and adolescents over 12 years, the typical daily dose is 1-5 million IU (0.6-3 g), divided into 4-6 doses.

Method

This medication is administered by a doctor as an injection into a muscle or vein, either as a direct injection or a short infusion.

Important

For severe infections, the maximum daily dose can be up to 40 million IU (24 g).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Allergic reactions (such as mild rash or itching)
  • Hives
  • Fever
  • Joint pain
  • Inflammation of the mouth lining or tongue
  • Nausea or vomiting
RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions, such as rash, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or tongue, or anaphylactic shock.
  • Seizures or convulsions
  • Electrolyte imbalances
  • Severe diarrhea, which may be associated with colon inflammation
  • Kidney problems, such as blood or protein in the urine, or decreased urine production.
  • Blood count changes, such as decreased white or red blood cells, and blood clotting disorders.
  • Liver inflammation.
  • Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction, with symptoms like sudden fever, chills, skin redness, headache, muscle and joint pain, and fatigue.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to penicillin or have had a severe allergic reaction during penicillin treatment.
  • Do not use if you have had a severe allergic reaction to other beta-lactam antibiotics, such as cephalosporins.
  • Seizures may occur if the infusion is given too quickly.
  • Severe local reactions may occur in infants if given intramuscularly; if possible, the medicine should be given intravenously.
