How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will give you this medicine. The dose depends on your age, weight, and the type of infection. For adults, it's usually 0.6-3 grams daily, given 4-6 times. For severe infections, up to 24 grams daily. For children, the dose is based on body weight and given multiple times a day.

Method

This medicine is given as a shot into a muscle or as a drip (infusion) into a vein, usually lasting 30-60 minutes. For babies, it's better to give it into a vein if possible to avoid strong reactions.

Important

For adults with severe infections, the maximum daily dose can be up to 24 grams. For muscle injections, the maximum dose for one injection site is 6 grams per day.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to benzylpenicillin or any other penicillin. Do not use if you have had a severe allergic reaction to penicillin or similar antibiotics before (like skin rash, itching, fever, trouble breathing, or low blood pressure). This could be life-threatening.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, serious changes in your body's salts (like potassium), liver or kidney problems, epilepsy, fluid in your brain, or meningitis. This medicine can increase your risk of seizures.
  • Tell your doctor if you have glandular fever (mononucleosis), certain white blood cell cancers, or a fungal skin infection, as you might get more skin reactions.
  • If you get severe, lasting diarrhea during treatment, tell your doctor right away. This could be a sign of colon inflammation.
  • If the medicine is given into a vein too quickly, you could have seizures.
