  • Changes in lab test results.
RARE
  • Allergic reactions, such as skin rashes, hives, or more severe reactions that can cause breathing problems, asthma, skin bleeding, or stomach and bowel issues. Seek urgent medical help if these occur.
  • Severe skin reactions, such as a rash with fever and blisters (erythema multiforme) or widespread peeling of the skin (exfoliative dermatitis).
  • Nausea, vomiting, tongue inflammation (black hairy tongue), or inflammation of the mouth lining.
  • Electrolyte imbalances (changes in body salts) or nervous system problems, such as seizures, especially if high doses are given too quickly.
  • Diarrhea (there is a risk of colon inflammation).
  • Kidney problems, such as kidney disease, abnormal amounts of protein or blood in urine, sediment in urine, or decreased urine output.
  • Changes in blood cell counts (white or red cells), or problems with blood clotting.
  • Various rashes, such as flat red spots (maculopapular rash), measles-like rash, itching, or inflammatory redness of the skin (erythema).
  • Swelling in the face, mouth, or tongue (angioedema), prolonged bleeding, or low platelet count (thrombocytopenia).
  • Serum sickness (fever, swollen lymph nodes, itching) or Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction (sudden fever, chills, headache, muscle and joint pain, fatigue).
  • Neurological problems (which can include seizures and loss of consciousness), liver inflammation, or decreased bile flow in the gallbladder.
  • Blistering skin disease (pemphigoid).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to penicillin or have had a severe allergic reaction to similar antibiotics in the past.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you get severe or persistent diarrhea during treatment, as it could be a sign of a serious bowel inflammation.
  • If the medicine is infused too quickly, it can cause seizures.
  • For infants, injections into a muscle can cause severe local reactions. If possible, the medicine should always be given into a vein for this age group.
