How to Use

Dosage

Children under 12 months get 0.05 ml. Adults and children 12 months or older get 0.1 ml.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give you the shot into the top layer of your skin. Keep the shot area uncovered to help it heal.

Important

You will only get one dose of this vaccine.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Mild swelling, redness, and tenderness at the injection site, followed by a local skin lesion.
  • After a few weeks, this skin lesion might turn into a small ulcer.
  • After some months, the ulcer will heal and leave a small, flat scar at the injection site.
  • The lymph nodes in your armpit might swell a little.
  • Fever.
  • Swollen lymph nodes in your armpit that are bigger than 1 cm.
  • Lymph node inflammation, sometimes with oozing ulcers and pus.
  • An oozing sore where you got the shot.
  • Headache.
RARE
  • A pus-filled lump (abscess) where you got the shot.
  • An infection caused by the vaccine can spread through your body, even to your bones.
  • Some people have fainted or had seizures after getting the shot.
  • Very premature babies (born at or before 28 weeks) might stop breathing for longer than usual for 2-3 days after the vaccine.

Important Warnings

  • Do not get this vaccine if you are allergic to Mycobacterium bovis bacteria or any other part of this vaccine.
  • Do not get this vaccine if you have a serious fever or a large skin infection. You should get the vaccine later.
  • Do not get this vaccine if your body's defense system (immune system) is weak because of an illness.
  • Do not get this vaccine if you are taking medicines or treatments that weaken your immune system (like steroids or radiation therapy), or if you were exposed to such treatment while in the womb or through breastfeeding.
  • Do not get this vaccine if you have certain cancers (like lymphoma, leukemia, or Hodgkin's disease).

  • Do not get this vaccine if it's unclear how strong your immune system is.
  • Do not get this vaccine if you have HIV.
  • Do not get this vaccine if you are taking medicine for tuberculosis (TB).
  • If you have a rash, the vaccine can be given on a part of your skin that does not have a rash.
  • If you have already tested positive for tuberculosis, you do not need this vaccine, as it could cause a strong reaction where the shot is given.
  • This vaccine is not suggested if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Serious allergic reactions (like redness or swelling of your face or neck, skin rash, trouble breathing, or fainting) are very rare but can happen. Get medical help right away if you have any of these.
