Sodium chloride

Fresenius Medical Care Deutschland GmbH

How to Use

Dosage

For adults, usually 2 to 3 liters of solution are used four times a day. For children, the doctor decides the amount based on their size and age, usually 600-800 ml for every square meter of body surface, four times a day.

Method

The liquid is put into your belly through a tube, stays there to clean your blood, and then is drained out.

Important

Your doctor will tell you the most liquid you can use in a day. For adults, it's usually no more than 12 liters in 24 hours.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if your blood potassium is too low, your blood calcium is too high, or you have a problem with too much acid in your blood (lactic acidosis).
  • Peritoneal dialysis should not usually start if you have a recent belly injury or surgery, severe burns, a bad skin infection, an infection inside your belly (peritonitis), wounds that won't heal, hernias, or growths in your belly or intestines. Also, if you have serious lung problems, blood poisoning, very high fat levels in your blood, or are severely underweight due to poor nutrition.
  • Contact your doctor right away if you get very low salt levels from throwing up or diarrhea, if you have abnormal kidneys, signs of an infection in your belly (cloudy fluid, belly pain, fever), or severe belly pain, swelling, or throwing up. These can be very serious problems.
