How to Use

Dosage

Adults typically use 2000-3000 ml of solution four times a day (CAPD), or 2000-3000 ml per exchange for 3-10 exchanges overnight and 1-2 during the day (APD).

Method

The solution is put directly into your abdomen (intraperitoneally). Make sure the solution is clear and the package is not damaged. Mix the two parts of the medicine bag according to instructions and warm the bag to body temperature before use.

Important

Your doctor will decide your maximum daily dose and treatment schedule, which typically involves multiple exchanges of up to 3000 ml each.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Peritonitis (inflammation of the abdominal lining), with symptoms like cloudy dialysate, stomach pain, fever, nausea, or rarely blood poisoning.
  • Infection at the catheter exit site or tunnel, causing redness, swelling, pain, discharge, or hardening.
  • Hernia (a bulge in the abdominal wall).
  • Low potassium levels in the blood.
  • Problems with the flow of dialysis solution in and out of the abdomen.
  • Abdominal swelling or feeling of fullness.
  • Shoulder pain.
  • High blood sugar levels.
  • High blood fat levels.
  • Weight gain.
RARE
  • Diarrhea.
  • Constipation.
  • Blood poisoning (sepsis).
  • Trouble breathing.
  • General feeling of being unwell.
  • Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS), with symptoms like stomach pain, abdominal swelling, or vomiting.
  • Low calcium levels in the blood.
  • Dehydration (low body fluid levels), seen as fast weight loss, low blood pressure, or fast heartbeat.
  • Fluid overload, with symptoms like fluid in tissues and lungs, high blood pressure, or breathing difficulties.
  • Dizziness.
  • Overactive parathyroid glands, which can lead to bone problems.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if your blood potassium or calcium levels are very low, or if you have a condition called lactic acidosis.
  • Peritoneal dialysis should not be started if you have recent abdominal injury, surgery, severe burns, widespread skin inflammation, peritonitis, unhealed wounds, hernias, or tumors in the abdomen or intestines.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have overactive parathyroid glands, severe electrolyte imbalance from vomiting/diarrhea, abnormal kidneys, inflammatory bowel disease, bowel obstruction, lung disease (especially pneumonia), blood poisoning, very high blood fat levels, uremia not treatable by dialysis, or severe malnutrition/weight loss.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience cloudy dialysate, abdominal pain, fever, nausea, or signs of blood poisoning, as these could indicate peritonitis. Bring the cloudy fluid bag to your doctor.
  • Severe abdominal pain, swelling, or vomiting can be a sign of encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS), a life-threatening complication.

  • Peritoneal dialysis can cause your body to lose proteins and water-soluble vitamins; a good diet or supplements are recommended to prevent deficiencies.
