How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 150-200 mg per day.

Method

Take this medicine exactly as your doctor tells you, usually with or after a light meal, at the same time each day. For insomnia, it's usually taken in the evening.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose. Do not change your dose without consulting your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Weight changes (gain or loss)
  • Dizziness, headache
  • Dry mouth, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation
  • Tiredness
RARE
  • Problems with concentration or memory, changes in sexual desire, restlessness, confusion, sleeplessness
  • Coordination problems, trembling, weakness, reduced attention
  • Mild drop in blood pressure, fainting (especially when standing up quickly)
  • Stuffy nose, skin rash, swelling
  • Changes in blood cell counts (e.g., anemia)
  • Serotonin syndrome (symptoms include headache, muscle stiffness, faster reflexes, coordination difficulties, anxiety, restlessness, confusion, sweating, diarrhea)
  • Blurred vision
  • Changes in heart rhythm (e.g., prolonged QT interval), slow or fast heartbeat
  • Yellow skin (jaundice), liver problems or damage
  • Painful, prolonged erection (priapism)
  • Allergic reactions, itching, sweating a lot
  • Changes in appetite, indigestion, stomach ache, inflammation of stomach or intestines, bowel blockage, increased saliva, changes in taste, problems urinating
  • Suicidal thoughts or behavior, anxiety, nervousness, false beliefs and hallucinations, nightmares
  • Seizures, drowsiness, involuntary movements, speech problems, abnormal sensations
  • High blood pressure, shortness of breath, weakness, flu-like symptoms, chest pain, fever
  • Pain in arms, legs, back, muscles, or joints

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Azona if you are allergic to trazodone or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take Azona if you are under the influence of alcohol or sleeping pills.
  • Do not take Azona if you have recently had a heart attack or if you are under 18 years old.
  • Talk to your doctor before taking Azona if you have heart problems like ischemic heart disease, slow heart rhythm, or a history of prolonged QT interval.
  • Consult your doctor if you have epilepsy, urination problems, enlarged prostate, glaucoma, liver or kidney problems, or an overactive thyroid.

  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide during treatment, contact your doctor or nearest hospital immediately.
  • Stop taking Azona and contact your doctor immediately if you experience a painful, prolonged erection (priapism).
  • Avoid alcohol while taking Azona, as it can make you more tired.
  • Azona may affect your ability to drive or operate machinery, especially at the beginning of treatment. Be cautious until you know how the medicine affects you.
  • Do not stop taking Azona or change your dose without talking to your doctor.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Sedative. Serotonergic. Consider another antidepressant for primary treatment. Increases risk of falls. Consider potential significant interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 12.2.2024)
