How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the typical dose is 500 mg once daily for 3 days, or 500 mg on day 1 followed by 250 mg daily on days 2-5. For chlamydia, it's a single 1000 mg dose.

Method

Take the tablet(s) once a day, with or without food. The 500 mg tablet can be divided into equal doses.

Important

Do not exceed 500 mg per day for multi-day treatments. For a single dose chlamydia treatment, the maximum is 1000 mg.

  • Fungal infections, including in the mouth or vagina; bacterial infections

  • Inflammation of stomach or gut lining, with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling and irritation inside the nose
  • Low white blood cell count
  • Increased number of a certain type of white blood cell (eosinophils)
  • Severe allergic reactions causing swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat
  • Allergic reactions
  • Nervousness
  • Reduced sense of touch
  • Drowsiness or sleeplessness
  • Hearing loss, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), vertigo, or ear pain
  • Feeling your heart beat (palpitations)
  • Constipation
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Swollen stomach with an uncomfortable full feeling or rumbling
  • Dry mouth or mouth sores
  • Belching
  • Too much saliva
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Severe skin reactions (like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, with rash, blistering, red patches, and sores)
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight
  • Hives (itchy rash)
  • Skin inflammation or rash
  • Dry skin
  • Heavy sweating
  • Swelling of the face, ankles, feet, or fingers
  • Pain, fever, or chest pain
  • Joint problems causing pain and stiffness
  • Muscle, back, or neck pain
  • Fluid retention in the body
  • Painful or difficult urination
  • Kidney pain (lower back pain)
  • General feeling of being unwell or weakness
  • Hot flashes
  • Nosebleed
  • Uterine bleeding between periods
  • Testicular problems
  • Changes in blood test results
  • Complications after a procedure
  • Serious skin reactions with red areas and small blisters filled with fluid
  • Restlessness
  • Abnormal liver function or yellowing of the skin/eyes (jaundice) due to blocked bile flow
  • Severe rash with fever, swollen lymph nodes, and increased white blood cells (eosinophils)
  • Serious gut infection caused by bacteria (pseudomembranous colitis)
  • Low platelet count (cells that help blood clot)
  • Anemia caused by abnormal breakdown of red blood cells
  • Severe and life-threatening allergic reactions, including swelling of the mouth and throat
  • Aggression, anxiety, severe confusion, or hallucinations
  • Fainting, seizures, or feeling overly active
  • Problems with smell (loss or change) or taste (loss)
  • Worsening or new onset of myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness)
  • Irregular heart rhythm, including very fast heart rate, prolonged QT interval (which can cause irregular heartbeats), or life-threatening fast heart rhythm (Torsade de Pointes); abnormal ECG findings
  • Low blood pressure
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
  • Discoloration of the tongue
  • Rapidly progressing severe liver inflammation, liver cell death, or liver failure (rarely life-threatening)
  • Very severe skin disorder with peeling skin (toxic epidermal necrolysis) or skin disorder with itchy, reddish patches (erythema multiforme)
  • Kidney inflammation or acute kidney failure

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to azithromycin, other macrolide antibiotics, or any ingredients in this medicine.
  • Seek immediate medical help for severe allergic reactions like swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing, as these can be life-threatening.
  • This medicine can sometimes cause new infections by other bacteria or fungi that are resistant to it.
  • Tell your doctor if you get severe or persistent diarrhea, as it could be a sign of a serious gut infection (Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea or pseudomembranous colitis).
  • This medicine can affect your heart rhythm. Tell your doctor if you have heart problems or a history of irregular heartbeats.

  • Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, as your dose may need adjustment or treatment might be stopped.
  • Tell your doctor if you have nervous system issues (neurological disorders) or mental health problems, or if you have myasthenia gravis (a muscle weakness condition) as this medicine can worsen it.
