How to Use

Dosage

Typically, take 500 mg once daily for 3 days, or 500 mg on the first day then 250 mg daily for days 2-5. For certain infections like Chlamydia, a single dose of 1000 mg may be prescribed.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water. You can take them with or without food. If you take antacids, take Azithromycin Sandoz at least two hours before or two hours after the antacid.

Important

Do not take more than your doctor prescribes; generally, a maximum of 500 mg per day, except for the single dose of 1000 mg for Chlamydia infections.

RARE

  • Liver problems (e.g., jaundice, liver inflammation, liver failure)
  • Kidney problems (e.g., kidney inflammation, kidney failure)
  • Heart rhythm disorders, irregular heartbeat, palpitations, low blood pressure
  • Severe or bloody diarrhea, inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
  • Anxiety, confusion, hallucinations, aggression, seizures, fainting
  • Muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis)
  • Hearing loss, ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Sensitivity to sunlight
  • Low blood cell counts (e.g., platelets, red or white blood cells)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to azithromycin, erythromycin, other macrolide antibiotics, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Stop use and contact a doctor immediately if you experience sudden difficulty breathing, speaking, or swallowing, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, severe dizziness, or a widespread rash with blisters.
  • Contact a doctor immediately if your skin or the whites of your eyes turn yellow, your urine becomes dark, you bleed easily, or you feel confused, as these can be signs of serious liver problems.
  • Contact a doctor immediately if you get severe, long-lasting, or bloody diarrhea with stomach pain or fever, and do not take anti-diarrhea medicine without a doctor's advice.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems (e.g., weak heart, very slow or irregular heartbeat) or kidney or liver disease.
