How to Use

Dosage

For adults and children over 45 kg: Take 500 mg once a day for 3 days OR 500 mg on day 1, then 250 mg once a day for days 2-5. For a specific STD (Chlamydia), take a single 1000 mg dose.

Method

Swallow the tablets with water. You can take them with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 1000 mg as a single dose for certain infections, otherwise 500 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Vomiting, stomach pain, nausea
  • Changes in some white blood cell counts and blood bicarbonate levels
RARE
  • Fungal infections (e.g., in mouth or vagina), pneumonia, other bacterial infections
  • Sore throat, stomach or intestinal lining inflammation
  • Breathing difficulties (shortness of breath, wheezing, cough), chest pain, stuffy nose
  • Allergic reactions like swelling of lips, face, or neck, rash, hives
  • Loss of appetite, nervousness, trouble sleeping
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, changes in taste, tingling or numbness, vision problems, ear problems, spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Abnormal heart rhythm or rate, feeling your heart beat (palpitations), hot flashes, nosebleed
  • Digestive issues like stomach inflammation, constipation, gas, indigestion, dry mouth, burping, mouth sores, loose stools, swollen belly
  • Liver problems (e.g., hepatitis), changes in liver enzymes or blood tests
  • Skin issues like rash, itching, hives, dry skin, excessive sweating, or rapid-onset red areas with small blisters
  • Bone, joint, muscle, back, and neck pain
  • Painful or difficult urination, upper back pain (kidney pain)
  • Vaginal inflammation, irregular periods, testicular problems
  • Chest pain, swelling, feeling unwell, weakness, fatigue, fever
  • Agitation, feeling unreal about yourself or your emotions, tooth discoloration
  • Abnormal liver function, yellowing of skin/eyes (cholestatic jaundice)
  • Skin sensitivity to sunlight (redness and blisters when exposed to sun)
  • Severe allergic reactions like DRESS syndrome (rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes, organ problems) or anaphylactic shock (severe reaction with breathing difficulties or dizziness)
  • Very severe liver problems or liver failure (sometimes life-threatening): symptoms include tiredness with yellow skin/eyes, dark urine, and easy bleeding
  • Serious skin conditions with blisters/bleeding on lips, eyes, nose, mouth or genitals (like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, erythema multiforme, toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Changes in heart rhythm seen on ECG (prolonged QT interval, fast heartbeats, specific irregular heartbeats)
  • Long-lasting diarrhea with blood and mucus (pseudomembranous colitis)
  • Blood disorders, such as unusual bleeding or bruising, low red blood cell count leading to tiredness or weakness
  • Aggressiveness, anxiety, confusion, seeing or hearing things that are not there
  • Fainting, seizures, reduced sensation, overactivity, changes or loss of smell, loss of taste, muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis)
  • Hearing loss, including possible deafness and/or ringing in the ears
  • Low blood pressure (may include weakness, dizziness, and fainting)
  • Tongue discoloration, pancreas inflammation (pancreatitis) causing nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, back pain
  • Rash with spots and blisters
  • Joint pain
  • Kidney failure

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to azithromycin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you are allergic to other similar antibiotics (macrolide or ketolide types, like erythromycin).
  • Stop taking the medicine and tell your doctor immediately if you get signs of liver problems, like yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, itching, or pain in your belly area.
  • If you have a serious allergic reaction (like trouble breathing, dizziness, swelling of your face or throat, rash, or hives), stop taking the medicine and get medical help right away.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you get severe, lasting diarrhea with blood or mucus during or after treatment.
