How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 5 mg, taken twice a day. Your doctor might change this dose.

Method

Swallow tablets whole with water, with or without food, approximately 12 hours apart.

Important

Your doctor will determine your maximum daily dose based on how well you tolerate the medicine.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • High blood pressure
  • Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion, sore mouth/tongue/throat, constipation
  • Shortness of breath, cough, hoarseness
  • Lack of energy, weakness or tiredness
  • Underactive thyroid (detected by blood test)
  • Redness and swelling on hands/feet (hand-foot syndrome), rash, dry skin
  • Joint pain, pain in hands or feet
  • Loss of appetite
  • Protein in urine (detected by urine test)
  • Weight loss
  • Headache, taste changes or loss of taste
  • Dehydration
  • Kidney failure
  • Flatulence, hemorrhoids, bleeding gums, rectal bleeding, burning/stinging sensation in mouth
  • Overactive thyroid (detected by blood test)
  • Sore throat or nose, irritated throat
  • Muscle pain
  • Nosebleed
  • Itching, skin redness, hair loss
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Decreased red blood cell count (detected by blood test)
  • Decreased platelet count (cells that help blood clot, detected by blood test)
  • Red blood cells in urine (detected by urine test)
  • Changes in blood chemical/enzyme levels (detected by blood test)
  • Increased red blood cell count (detected by blood test)
  • Swelling in abdomen, legs or ankles, swollen neck veins, severe tiredness, shortness of breath (signs of heart failure)
  • Fistulas (abnormal passages between body cavities or to the skin)
  • Dizziness
  • Inflammation of the gallbladder
RARE
  • Decreased white blood cell count (detected by blood test)
  • Enlargement and weakening of a blood vessel wall, or rupture of a blood vessel wall (aneurysms and arterial dissections)

Important Warnings

  • This medicine can increase blood pressure. Your blood pressure will be checked before and during treatment.
  • This medicine can affect your thyroid. Tell your doctor if you feel tired, cold, or your voice changes.
  • Get urgent medical help if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, numbness, weakness on one side of your body, speech problems, headache, or vision changes. These could be signs of blood clots.
  • This medicine can increase bleeding risk. Tell your doctor if you have any bleeding, cough up blood, or have bloody phlegm.
  • This medicine can cause holes or abnormal connections in the stomach or intestines. Tell your doctor if you have severe stomach pain.

  • If you are having surgery or have an unhealed wound, treatment with this medicine might be stopped.
  • Get urgent medical help if you have headache, confusion, seizures, or vision changes, especially with high blood pressure. These could be signs of a rare brain swelling.
  • Your doctor will check your liver function with blood tests before and during treatment.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe tiredness, swelling in your belly, legs or ankles, shortness of breath, or swollen neck veins. These could be signs of heart problems.
