How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 5 milligrams twice a day.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water, with or without food. Take doses about 12 hours apart.

Important

Your doctor will decide your maximum daily dose based on how well you tolerate the medicine.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • High blood pressure
  • Digestive issues (diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion, constipation)
  • Mouth and throat problems (sore mouth or throat, burning sensation in mouth, bleeding gums)
  • Breathing problems (shortness of breath, cough, hoarseness, nosebleed)
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Thyroid problems (underactive or overactive)
  • Skin problems (redness and swelling of hands and feet, rash, dry skin, itching, hair loss)
  • Pain (joint pain, hand or foot pain, muscle pain, headache)
  • Loss of appetite, weight loss
  • Urinary problems (protein or red blood cells in urine)
  • Taste changes or loss
  • Dehydration
  • Kidney failure
  • Blood cell changes (decreased red blood cells or platelets, increased red blood cells, changes in blood chemicals)
  • Swelling and fluid retention (swelling in abdomen, legs, or ankles, swollen neck veins)
  • Dizziness
  • Gallbladder inflammation
  • Ringing in ears (tinnitus)
RARE
  • Decreased white blood cells
  • Enlargement or tear in a blood vessel wall (aneurysms and arterial dissections)

Important Warnings

  • Tell your doctor if you have high blood pressure, as this medicine can raise it and your blood pressure will be checked regularly.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had thyroid problems, as this medicine can affect how your thyroid works.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you have had a blood clot, stroke, or heart attack, or if you suddenly experience chest pain, shortness of breath, difficulty speaking, or numbness on one side of your body.
  • Tell your doctor if you have bleeding problems, as this medicine can increase the risk of bleeding; contact your doctor immediately if you cough up blood, have black stools, or experience bleeding.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had stomach or bowel problems, as this medicine can cause holes or abnormal connections; contact your doctor immediately if you have severe stomach pain.

  • Tell your doctor if you are having surgery or have a wound that is not healing, as the medicine may need to be stopped before surgery.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you have headaches, confusion, seizures, or vision changes, as these could be signs of a rare brain swelling.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver problems, as your doctor will check your liver function with blood tests.
  • Tell your doctor if you are very tired or have swelling in your abdomen, legs, or ankles, shortness of breath, or swollen neck veins, as these can be signs of heart failure.
