How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 5 mg, taken twice a day.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water, with or without food. Take your doses about 12 hours apart.

Important

The maximum daily dose your doctor will usually recommend is 10 mg, but this can be adjusted.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • High blood pressure
  • Diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion, soreness in mouth, tongue or throat, constipation
  • Shortness of breath, cough, hoarseness
  • Lack of energy, weakness or tiredness
  • Underactive thyroid (can be detected by blood test)
  • Redness and swelling of palms or soles (hand-foot syndrome), rash, dry skin
  • Joint pain, pain in hands or feet
  • Loss of appetite
  • Protein in urine (can be detected by urine sample)
  • Weight loss
  • Headache, changes in taste or loss of taste
  • Dehydration (fluid loss)
  • Kidney failure
  • Flatulence, hemorrhoids, bleeding gums, rectal bleeding, burning or stinging sensation in the mouth
  • Overactive thyroid (can be detected by blood test)
  • Throat or nose pain and throat irritation
  • Muscle pain
  • Nosebleed
  • Itching, skin redness, hair loss
  • Ringing in ears (tinnitus)
  • Decreased red blood cell count (can be detected by blood test)
  • Decreased platelet count (cells that help blood clot) (can be detected by blood test)
  • Red blood cells in urine (can be detected by urine sample)
  • Changes in levels of certain chemicals/enzymes in blood (can be detected by blood test)
  • Increased red blood cell count (can be detected by blood test)
  • Swelling in the abdomen, legs or ankles, bulging neck veins, significant fatigue, shortness of breath (signs of heart failure)
  • Fistulas (abnormal passages from one body cavity to another or to the skin)
  • Dizziness
  • Gallbladder inflammation
RARE
  • Decreased white blood cell count (can be detected by blood test)

Important Warnings

  • If you have high blood pressure, as this medicine can raise it. Your blood pressure needs to be checked regularly.
  • If you have thyroid problems, as this medicine can affect your thyroid gland. Your thyroid function needs to be checked regularly.
  • If you have recently had blood clots in veins or arteries (e.g., stroke, heart attack, or other blockages), or develop symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, numbness, speech difficulties, headache, or dizziness.
  • If you have bleeding problems, or if you cough up blood or have black, tarry stools.
  • If you have or have had an aneurysm (a bulging and weak area in a blood vessel) or a tear in a blood vessel wall.

  • If you get severe stomach pain that doesn't go away, as this could mean a hole in your stomach or bowel, or an abnormal connection (fistula) has formed.
  • If you are going to have surgery or have an unhealed wound, as this medicine can affect wound healing. Treatment might need to be paused.
  • If you experience headache, confusion, seizures, or vision changes (with or without high blood pressure), as these could be signs of a rare brain swelling condition.
  • If you have liver problems, as your doctor needs to check your liver function with blood tests.
  • If you experience extreme tiredness, swelling in your belly, legs, or ankles, shortness of breath, or bulging neck veins, as these can be signs of heart failure.
