How to Use

Dosage

0.5 ml by injection for people aged 16 and older.

Method

The vaccine is injected into a muscle in the upper arm. If you have a bleeding disorder, it can be given under the skin. Do not inject into the skin or a blood vessel, and not in the buttocks.

Important

Only one dose is given at a time; it is not for daily use.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Pain at the injection site
  • Feeling weak or tired
  • Headache
  • Feeling sick (nausea) or throwing up (vomiting)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhea or stomach pain
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Mild fever
  • Redness at the injection site
RARE
  • Lump at the injection site
  • Temporary changes in liver blood tests
  • Fainting
  • Skin rashes, sometimes itchy or lumpy (hives)
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Severe allergic reactions (like trouble breathing, swelling of face or throat, dizziness, rapid heartbeat)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Avaxim if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, including neomycin, or if you have a high fever.
  • Tell your doctor or nurse if you have liver disease, a weakened immune system, or a bleeding disorder.
  • This vaccine only protects against Hepatitis A; it does not protect against other types of hepatitis and may not fully protect everyone.
