Attentin is a stimulant medicine that helps improve focus, attention, and reduce impulsive behavior in children aged 6-17 with ADHD when other treatments haven't worked.

How to Use

Dosage

The usual recommended dose is between 5 mg and 20 mg per day.

Method

Take tablets by mouth with water, preferably with or immediately after a meal, at the same time each day. The last dose should not be taken too late in the afternoon to avoid sleep issues. Tablets can be divided to make swallowing easier, not for equal doses.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 20 mg, though in rare cases it may be increased to 40 mg by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Decreased appetite and slower weight gain/loss in children with long-term use.
  • Sleep problems.
  • Nervousness.
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat, or feeling your heart beat strongly.
  • Stomach pain or cramps, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth.
  • Changes in blood pressure and heart rate (usually an increase).
  • Headache, dizziness, jerky or uncontrolled movements, hyperactivity.
  • Mood changes such as anxiety, depression, irritability, or unusual aggression.
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, difficulty swallowing or breathing (seek immediate medical help).
  • Seeing or hearing things that are not real (hallucinations), severe mental problems (psychosis), or thoughts of harming oneself.
  • Problems with clear vision, blurred vision, dilated pupils.
  • Slowed growth in children with long-term use.
  • Seizures or fits.
  • Liver problems, which can be severe.
  • Heart attack, heart muscle disease, or sudden death.
  • Stroke (a sudden interruption of blood supply to part of the brain).
  • Confusion or feeling dependent on the medicine.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if allergic to dexamfetamine sulfate or other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you are currently using or have used antidepressant medicines called MAO inhibitors within the last 14 days, as this can cause a sudden and dangerous rise in blood pressure.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine, as alcohol can increase side effects.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness, blurred vision, or problems focusing, making activities like driving, operating machinery, or climbing dangerous.
  • If you take too much of this medicine, contact a doctor, hospital, or poison control center immediately. Overdosing can be very serious.

  • Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose; simply wait for your next scheduled dose.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, as it can cause extreme tiredness, depression, mood changes, and other withdrawal symptoms. Your doctor will advise on how to gradually reduce the dose.
  • Tell your doctor if your child is going to have surgery, as this medicine might need to be stopped on the day of surgery due to risk of sudden high blood pressure with certain anesthetics.
  • This medicine may cause a positive result in drug tests, such as those for sports.
