How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose, usually 0.5 mg given into a vein for slow heart rate. Doses vary depending on what the medicine is used for.

Method

The medicine is given as an injection into a vein (intravenous), a muscle (intramuscular), or under the skin (subcutaneous).

Important

For slow heart rate, the total dose is usually up to 3 mg. For poisoning, much higher doses may be given by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Blurred vision
  • Dry mouth
  • Dilated pupils, sensitivity to light, or increased eye pressure
  • Constipation, vomiting, difficulty swallowing, or changes in taste
  • Difficulty urinating or inability to urinate
  • Slow or fast heart rate, palpitations, or irregular heartbeat
  • Red and dry skin, rash, or allergic reactions
  • Headache, confusion, or drowsiness
  • Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren't there)
RARE
  • Insomnia (trouble sleeping)
  • Dizziness
  • Nasal congestion
  • Impotence (erectile dysfunction)
  • High body temperature
  • Severe allergic reactions, including anaphylactic shock (a very serious allergic reaction)
  • Increased white blood cells (leukocytosis)

Important Warnings

  • Use with caution if you are a child or elderly, or if you have conditions like an overactive thyroid, liver or kidney disease, or high blood pressure.
  • If you have a lung disease, this medicine might cause mucus to thicken in your lungs.
  • People with Down's syndrome may be more sensitive to this medicine.
  • Small doses can sometimes cause your heart rate to slow down too much.
  • This medicine can slow down digestion and may worsen symptoms if you have stomach ulcers or severe heartburn.

  • This medicine can increase pressure in your eyes, so eye pressure should be checked by a doctor.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery if this medicine makes you drowsy or blurs your vision.
