How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose. For example, before surgery, the dose might be around 0.01 mg per kg of body weight, up to 0.6 mg, or 0.5 mg for a slow heart rate.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection into a vein or muscle by a doctor or nurse.

Important

The treating doctor will determine the maximum daily dose for your specific condition. For some heart conditions, the maximum might be 3 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Vision problems such as dilated pupils, blurred vision, double vision, and sensitivity to light.
  • Dry mouth, difficulty swallowing and speaking, thirst, reduced bronchial secretions.
  • Slow digestion, which may lead to constipation or reflux from the stomach to the esophagus.
  • Difficulty urinating.
  • Red, hot, and dry skin due to reduced sweating.
  • Confusion, hallucinations, agitation, or short-term memory loss.
  • Heart rhythm problems.
  • Fever due to reduced sweating.
RARE
  • Psychotic disorders, seizures, sedation.
  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis).
  • Irregular heartbeats (ventricular fibrillation, atrial fibrillation), chest pain.
  • High blood pressure crisis.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to atropine sulfate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have glaucoma (high pressure in the eye).
  • Do not use if you have a narrowing of the urinary tract (e.g., due to an enlarged prostate) or difficulty urinating.
  • Do not use if you have narrowing or paralysis of the digestive tract, severe ulcerative colitis, or reflux from the stomach to the esophagus.
  • Use with caution if you have heart failure, coronary artery disease, heart rhythm disorders, high blood pressure, or an overactive thyroid, or during heart surgery, or after a recent heart attack or heart transplant.

  • Do not use if you have myasthenia gravis (a muscle weakness disorder).
  • Use with caution if you have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as it can reduce secretions and lead to mucus plugs in the airways.
  • Use with caution if you are in a hot environment or have a fever, as this medicine reduces sweating and can increase body temperature.
  • Use with caution in elderly patients, children, infants, newborns, and patients with Down syndrome, diarrhea, or enlarged prostate.
  • This medicine can cause blurred vision, dizziness, and other effects that may impair your ability to drive or use machines.
