How to Use

Dosage

An initial injection of 6.75 mg is given intravenously over one minute, followed by a continuous infusion of 18 mg/hour for 3 hours, then 6 mg/hour for up to 45 hours or until contractions stop.

Method

This medicine is given in the hospital by a doctor or nurse intravenously (into a vein) in three steps: a rapid injection followed by two continuous drips.

Important

A single treatment course should not last longer than 48 hours. The treatment can be repeated up to three times during one pregnancy.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if your pregnancy is less than 24 weeks or more than 33 weeks along.
  • Do not use if your water has broken after 30 weeks of pregnancy.
  • Do not use if your baby's heartbeat is abnormal.
  • Do not use if you have vaginal bleeding and your doctor wants to start labor right away.
  • Do not use if you have severe pre-eclampsia (pregnancy poisoning) or eclampsia (pregnancy seizures) and labor needs to start immediately.

  • Do not use if your unborn baby has died.
  • Do not use if you have an infection in your womb.
  • Do not use if the placenta covers the birth canal or is detaching from the uterine wall.
  • Do not use if you or your unborn baby have other conditions that make continuing the pregnancy risky.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to atosiban or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you think your water has broken, even if it's early.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant with more than one baby (multiple pregnancy), as this can increase the risk of fluid in your lungs, especially if you also take blood pressure medicine.
  • Be aware that after birth, your womb might not contract as strongly, which could cause bleeding.
