This medicine helps stop or slow down premature labor by relaxing your uterus and reducing contractions. It is used for pregnant women between 24 and 33 weeks of pregnancy.

How to Use

Dosage

First, a small dose (6.75 mg in 0.9 ml) is slowly injected into a vein for one minute. Then, a continuous drip (infusion) of 18 mg per hour is given for 3 hours, followed by another continuous drip of 6 mg per hour for up to 45 hours, or until contractions stop.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection and a drip into a vein (intravenously) by a doctor, nurse, or midwife in the hospital.

Important

The treatment should not last more than 48 hours in total. It can be repeated up to three times if contractions return.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are less than 24 weeks pregnant or more than 33 weeks pregnant.
  • Do not use if your water has broken (membranes ruptured) and you are 30 weeks pregnant or more.
  • Do not use if your baby's heartbeat is not normal.
  • Do not use if you have vaginal bleeding and the doctor wants to deliver the baby right away.
  • Do not use if you have severe pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure, fluid build-up, protein in urine) or eclampsia (pre-eclampsia with seizures), and the doctor wants to deliver the baby right away.

  • Do not use if your unborn baby has died.
  • Do not use if you have an infection in your uterus.
  • Do not use if your placenta is covering the birth canal or is separating from the womb wall.
  • Do not use if you or your baby have other serious conditions that make continuing the pregnancy unsafe.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to atosiban or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you think your water has broken.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you are between 24 and 27 weeks pregnant.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant with more than one baby (twins, triplets, etc.).
  • Tell your doctor if the contractions return, as treatment can be repeated up to three times.
  • Tell your doctor if your unborn baby is small for how far along you are in pregnancy.
  • This medicine may make your uterus less likely to contract well after birth, which could lead to bleeding.
  • If you are pregnant with more than one baby and/or are taking other medicines to delay birth (like blood pressure medicine), there is a higher risk of fluid in your lungs (pulmonary edema).
