This medicine helps stop or slow down premature labor by relaxing your uterus and reducing contractions. It is used for pregnant women between 24 and 33 weeks of pregnancy.
First, a small dose (6.75 mg in 0.9 ml) is slowly injected into a vein for one minute. Then, a continuous drip (infusion) of 18 mg per hour is given for 3 hours, followed by another continuous drip of 6 mg per hour for up to 45 hours, or until contractions stop.
This medicine is given as an injection and a drip into a vein (intravenously) by a doctor, nurse, or midwife in the hospital.
The treatment should not last more than 48 hours in total. It can be repeated up to three times if contractions return.
