How to Use

Dosage

Initial injection of 6.75 mg (0.9 ml) followed by continuous infusions: 18 mg/hour for 3 hours, then 6 mg/hour for up to 45 hours.

Method

Administered intravenously (into a vein) in three steps by a doctor, nurse, or midwife.

Important

Total treatment duration should not exceed 48 hours for one course. Treatment can be repeated up to three times per pregnancy if contractions return.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Hot flushes
  • Vomiting
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Low blood pressure, which can make you feel dizzy or weak
  • Reaction at the injection site
  • High blood sugar
RARE
  • Fever (high body temperature)
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia)
  • Itching
  • Skin rash
  • Your uterus may not contract well after birth, which could lead to bleeding.
  • Allergic reactions
  • Shortness of breath or fluid in the lungs (lung edema), especially if you are pregnant with multiple babies or taking blood pressure medication.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if your pregnancy is less than 24 weeks or more than 33 weeks.
  • Do not use if your water has broken (membranes ruptured early) and you are 30 weeks pregnant or more.
  • Do not use if your unborn baby's heart rate is abnormal.
  • Do not use if you have vaginal bleeding and your doctor wants to induce labor immediately.
  • Do not use if you have severe pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure, fluid retention, or protein in urine) and your doctor wants to induce labor immediately.

  • Do not use if you have eclampsia (seizures during pregnancy), which means labor must be started right away.
  • Do not use if your unborn baby has died.
  • Do not use if you have or might have an infection inside the uterus.
  • Do not use if your placenta covers the birth canal (placenta previa) or is detaching from the uterine wall.
  • Do not use if you or your baby have other conditions that make continuing the pregnancy dangerous.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to atosiban or any other ingredient in this medicine.
