Atorvastatin SUN is a medicine that helps lower high levels of fats (like cholesterol) in your blood, especially when diet and lifestyle changes haven't been enough, and it can also reduce the risk of heart disease.

How to Use

Dosage

For adults and children aged 10 or older, the usual starting dose is 10 mg once a day. Your doctor may increase the dose if needed, usually every four weeks or less often.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water. You can take them at any time of day, with or without food. Try to take your tablet at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose of Atorvastatin SUN is 80 mg once a day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nasal passage inflammation, sore throat, nosebleed
  • Allergic reactions
  • High blood sugar levels (if you have diabetes, keep monitoring your blood sugar closely), increased levels of creatine kinase in blood
  • Headache
  • Nausea, constipation, gas, indigestion, diarrhea
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, and back pain
  • Abnormal liver function test results
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction causing swelling of the face, tongue, and throat, which can lead to severe breathing difficulties.
  • Severe skin illness with severe peeling and swelling of the skin, blisters on skin, mouth, eyes, and genitals, along with fever. Rash with pinkish and possibly blistered spots, especially on palms and soles.
  • Muscle weakness, tenderness, pain, or rupture, dark red-brown urine, especially if you also feel unwell or have a high fever. These could be signs of serious muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), which can be life-threatening and lead to kidney problems.
  • Unexpected or unusual bleeding or bruising, which could be a sign of liver problems. Contact your doctor as soon as possible.
  • Lupus-like syndrome (including rash, joint problems, and effects on blood cells).
  • Loss of appetite, weight gain, low blood sugar levels (if you have diabetes, keep monitoring your blood sugar closely)
  • Nightmares, sleeplessness
  • Dizziness, numbness or tingling in fingers and toes, reduced sensation to pain or touch, altered taste, memory loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Ringing in the ears and/or head
  • Vomiting, belching, upper and lower abdominal pain, inflammation of the pancreas (causing stomach pain)
  • Liver inflammation
  • Rash, itching, hives, hair loss
  • Neck pain, muscle fatigue
  • Fatigue, malaise, weakness, chest pain, swelling (especially in ankles), fever
  • Positive result in a urine white blood cell test
  • Vision disturbances
  • Bile duct blockage (yellowing of skin and whites of eyes)
  • Tendon damage
  • Possible skin rash or mouth sores (lichenoid drug reaction)
  • Purplish skin lesions (signs of blood vessel inflammation, i.e., vasculitis)
  • Allergic reaction with sudden wheezing, chest pain or tightness, swelling of eyelids, face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat, breathing difficulties, collapse
  • Hearing loss
  • Gynecomastia (breast enlargement in men)
  • Persistent muscle weakness
  • Myasthenia gravis (a disease causing general muscle weakness, sometimes affecting breathing muscles)
  • Ocular myasthenia (a disease causing muscle weakness in the eye)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to atorvastatin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have or have had liver disease.
  • Do not use if you have had unexplained abnormal liver blood test results.
  • Do not use if you are a woman who can become pregnant and are not using reliable birth control.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant.

  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding.
  • Do not use if you are taking glecaprevir/pibrentasvir combination for Hepatitis C.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe breathing problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking or have recently taken fusidic acid (an antibiotic for infections), as combining it with Atorvastatin SUN can cause severe muscle problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had a stroke with bleeding in the brain or have small pockets of fluid in the brain from past strokes.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism).
  • Tell your doctor if you have had repeated or unexplained muscle aches or pain, or if you or a family member has had muscle problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had muscle problems before with other medicines that lower blood fats (like other statins or fibrates).
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had myasthenia (a disease causing general muscle weakness, sometimes affecting breathing muscles) or ocular myasthenia (a disease causing eye muscle weakness), as statins can sometimes worsen the condition or trigger it.
  • Tell your doctor if you regularly drink a lot of alcohol. Avoid excessive alcohol use while taking this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had any liver disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you are over 70 years old.
  • Do not drink more than 1-2 small glasses of grapefruit juice daily, as large amounts can affect how Atorvastatin SUN works.
  • Do not drive or use machines if this medicine affects your ability to do so.
  • This medicine contains lactose. If you have been told you have an intolerance to some sugars, talk to your doctor before taking it.
