How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 10 mg once daily for adults and children 10 years and older. Your doctor may adjust this dose.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water. You can take it with or without food, but try to take it at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 80 mg once daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nose and throat inflammation, sore throat, nosebleeds.
  • Allergic reactions.
  • Increased blood sugar levels (if you have diabetes, keep monitoring carefully), increased creatine kinase in blood.
  • Headache.
  • Nausea, constipation, gas, indigestion, diarrhea.
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, and back pain.
  • Abnormal liver function test results.
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction causing swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, and trouble breathing.
  • Severe skin rash with peeling skin, blisters, swelling, and fever.
  • Muscle weakness, tenderness, pain, or tears, with reddish-brown urine, especially if you also have a fever or feel unwell. These can be signs of severe muscle breakdown, which can be life-threatening and cause kidney damage.
  • Loss of appetite, weight gain, or low blood sugar (if you have diabetes, monitor carefully).
  • Nightmares, sleeplessness.
  • Dizziness, numbness or tingling in fingers and toes, reduced sense of touch, changes in taste, memory problems.
  • Blurred vision or vision problems.
  • Ringing in the ears or noises in the head.
  • Vomiting, burping, stomach pains, pancreatitis (causing stomach pain).
  • Liver inflammation.
  • Rash, itching, hives, hair loss.
  • Neck pain, muscle fatigue.
  • Fatigue, general feeling of being unwell, weakness, chest pain, swelling (especially in ankles), fever.
  • Positive white blood cell test in urine.
  • Unexpected bleeding or bruising.
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes).
  • Tendon damage.
  • Skin rash or sores in the mouth.
  • Purplish skin lesions (sign of blood vessel inflammation).
  • Hearing loss.
  • Gynecomastia (enlargement of breasts in men).
  • Persistent muscle weakness.
  • Myasthenia gravis (general muscle weakness) or ocular myasthenia (eye muscle weakness).
  • Sexual dysfunction.
  • Depression.
  • Breathing problems, including persistent cough and/or shortness of breath or fever.
  • Diabetes (more likely in those at risk).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Atorvastatin SUN if you are allergic to atorvastatin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have or have had liver disease or unexplained abnormal liver blood test results.
  • Do not use if you are a woman who can get pregnant and are not using reliable birth control, or if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Do not use if you are taking a combination of glecaprevir/pibrentasvir for hepatitis C treatment.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe breathing problems.

  • Tell your doctor if you are taking or have taken fusidic acid (an antibiotic) in the last 7 days, as this combination can cause severe muscle problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had a stroke with bleeding in the brain, or small fluid pockets in the brain from previous strokes.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have an underactive thyroid.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had repeated or unexplained muscle aches or pains, or a family history of muscle problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had muscle problems with other medicines that lower blood fat (like other statins or fibrates).
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had myasthenia (general muscle weakness) or ocular myasthenia (eye muscle weakness), as statins can sometimes worsen these conditions.
  • Tell your doctor if you regularly drink a lot of alcohol.
  • Tell your doctor if you are over 70 years old.
  • If you have diabetes or are at risk of developing it, your doctor will monitor your condition while you take this medicine.
