How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 10 mg once a day for adults and children over 10 years old; your doctor may adjust it every four weeks until you reach the right dose.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water, either with food or on an empty stomach, at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 80 mg for adults and 20 mg for children.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction causing swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, which can make breathing difficult.
  • Severe skin reaction with peeling and swelling of the skin, blisters on the skin, mouth, eyes, and genitals, and fever. Rash with pink or red spots that might blister, especially on palms and soles.
  • Muscle weakness, tenderness, pain, muscle rupture, or reddish-brown urine, especially if you also feel unwell or have a high fever. These symptoms can be due to abnormal muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), which can be life-threatening and lead to kidney damage.
  • Unexpected or unusual bleeding or bruising, which might indicate a liver problem. Contact your doctor as soon as possible.
  • Lupus-like syndrome (including rash, joint disorders, and effects on blood cells).
  • Allergic reaction - symptoms can include sudden wheezing, chest pain or tightness, swelling of eyelids, face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat, breathing difficulties, fainting.
  • Hearing loss.
  • Breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia).
COMMON
  • Inflammation of nasal passages, sore throat, nosebleed.
  • Allergic reactions.
  • Increased blood sugar levels (if you have diabetes, continue careful monitoring), increased creatine kinase levels in the blood.
  • Headache.
  • Nausea, constipation, gas, indigestion, diarrhea.
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, and back pain.
  • Abnormal liver function test results.
RARE
  • Loss of appetite, weight gain, decreased blood sugar levels (if you have diabetes, continue careful monitoring).
  • Nightmares, sleeplessness.
  • Dizziness, numbness or tingling in fingers and toes, decreased pain or touch sensation, altered taste, memory loss.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Ringing in the ears and/or head.
  • Vomiting, belching, upper and lower stomach pain, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas causing stomach pain).
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis).
  • Rash, itching, hives, hair loss.
  • Neck pain, muscle fatigue.
  • Tiredness, feeling unwell, weakness, chest pain, swelling (especially in the ankles), fever.
  • Positive test for white blood cells in urine.
  • Vision problems.
  • Unexpected bleeding or bruising.
  • Cholestasis (yellowing of skin and whites of the eyes).
  • Tendon injury.
  • Possible skin rash or mouth sores (lichenoid drug reaction).
  • Purple skin lesions (signs of blood vessel inflammation, vasculitis).
  • Persistent muscle weakness.
  • Myasthenia gravis (a disease causing general muscle weakness, sometimes affecting breathing muscles).
  • Ocular myasthenia (a disease causing eye muscle weakness).
  • Weakness in arms or legs that gets worse after activity, double vision, drooping eyelids, difficulty swallowing, or shortness of breath.
  • Sexual difficulties.
  • Depression.
  • Breathing problems like persistent cough and/or shortness of breath or fever.
  • New onset of diabetes (more likely if you have high blood sugar and fat levels, are overweight, and have high blood pressure).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to atorvastatin or any similar medicine, or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have or have had liver disease, or if your liver blood tests have been unusually abnormal.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Women who can get pregnant must use effective birth control.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are taking glecaprevir/pibrentasvir for Hepatitis C.
  • If you need to take fusidic acid for a bacterial infection, you must temporarily stop this medicine. Combining them can cause severe muscle problems. Your doctor will tell you when it's safe to restart.

  • Limit grapefruit juice to one or two small glasses per day, as large amounts can change how this medicine works.
  • Do not drink too much alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had repeated or unexplained muscle aches, pains, or weakness, or if you or a family member has had muscle problems. Also, tell your doctor if you have had muscle problems with other similar cholesterol-lowering medicines.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have myasthenia (general muscle weakness) or ocular myasthenia (eye muscle weakness), as statins can sometimes make these conditions worse.
