How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 10 mg once a day for adults and children aged 10 years or older.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water, at any time of day, with or without food, but try to take it at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 80 mg for adults and 20 mg for children.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Inflammation of the nasal passages, sore throat, nosebleed.
  • Allergic reactions.
  • Increased blood sugar levels (monitor closely if you have diabetes).
  • Headache.
  • Nausea, constipation, gas, indigestion, diarrhea.
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, and back pain.
  • Abnormal liver function test results.
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling of face, tongue, and throat, causing trouble breathing.
  • Severe skin reactions with peeling, blistering skin, mouth sores, and fever (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome).
  • Muscle weakness, tenderness, pain, muscle breakdown, or reddish-brown urine, especially with fever or feeling unwell, which can be life-threatening.
  • Vision disturbances.
  • Unexpected bleeding or bruising.
  • Yellowing of skin and whites of eyes (jaundice).
  • Tendon injury.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to atorvastatin or any similar medicines.
  • Do not take if you have liver disease or abnormal liver blood test results.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Do not use if you are taking glecaprevir/pibrentasvir for Hepatitis C.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking or have recently taken fusidic acid (an antibiotic), as this combination can cause severe muscle problems.

  • Talk to your doctor if you have unexplained muscle aches, tenderness, or weakness.
  • Do not drink large amounts of grapefruit juice, as it can affect how the medicine works.
  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • If you have myasthenia (a disease causing muscle weakness), statins can sometimes worsen it.
