How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 10 mg once daily for adults and children aged 10 and older.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water, at any time of day, with or without food, but try to take them at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 80 mg once daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Inflammation of nasal passages, sore throat, nosebleed.
  • Allergic reactions.
  • Increased blood sugar levels (if you have diabetes, continue careful monitoring), increased creatine kinase levels in blood.
  • Headache.
  • Nausea, constipation, gas, digestive problems, diarrhea.
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, and back pain.
  • Abnormal liver function test results.
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction, with swelling of face, tongue, or throat, sudden wheezing, chest pain, and difficulty breathing.
  • Severe skin conditions, with severe peeling and swelling of the skin, blisters on the skin, mouth, eyes, and genitals, along with fever; or rash with pink-red spots, especially on palms or soles, that may break.
  • Muscle problems including muscle weakness, tenderness, pain, or rupture, and reddish-brown urine (rhabdomyolysis), especially if you feel unwell or have a high fever. This can be serious and lead to kidney damage.
  • Unexpected bleeding or bruising, which may indicate liver problems.
  • Lupus-like syndrome, with rash, joint pain, and effects on blood cells.
  • Loss of appetite, weight gain, decreased blood sugar (if diabetic).
  • Nightmares, trouble sleeping.
  • Dizziness, numbness or tingling in fingers/toes, reduced feeling of pain or touch, changed taste, memory loss.
  • Blurred vision, problems with sight.
  • Ringing in the ears and/or head.
  • Vomiting, belching, stomach pain (upper and lower abdomen), inflamed pancreas (pancreatitis), liver inflammation (hepatitis).
  • Rash, itchy skin, hives, hair loss, skin rash or mouth sores (lichenoid drug reaction), purple skin lesions (vasculitis).
  • Neck pain, tired muscles.
  • Tiredness, feeling unwell, weakness, chest pain, swelling (especially in ankles), fever, white blood cells in urine.
  • Tendon injury.
  • Hearing loss.
  • Enlargement of breast tissue in men (gynecomastia).
  • Persistent muscle weakness, myasthenia gravis (general muscle weakness including breathing muscles) or ocular myasthenia (eye muscle weakness).
  • Sexual dysfunction.
  • Depression.
  • Breathing problems including persistent cough, shortness of breath, or fever.
  • Diabetes (more likely if you have high blood sugar, high fat levels, are overweight, and have high blood pressure).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to atorvastatin or any other ingredient in it.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have or have had liver disease, or if your liver blood tests have shown unexplained abnormal results.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding. If you are a woman of childbearing age, you must use reliable birth control.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are using glecaprevir/pibrentasvir to treat Hepatitis C.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking or have recently taken fusidic acid (an antibiotic), as it can lead to severe muscle problems when combined with this medicine.

  • Tell your doctor if you have had repeated or unexplained muscle aches, pains, or weakness, or if a family member has had muscle problems.
  • Inform your doctor if you have myasthenia (general muscle weakness) or ocular myasthenia (eye muscle weakness), as statins can sometimes worsen these conditions.
  • Do not drink more than 1-2 small glasses of grapefruit juice per day, as large amounts can change how this medicine works.
  • Avoid drinking a lot of alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe lung disease, kidney problems, an underactive thyroid, or a history of stroke with bleeding in the brain.
