How to Use

Dosage

The recommended starting dose for adults and children over 10 years old is 10 mg once daily. Your doctor may increase the dose if needed.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water. You can take them any time of day, with or without food, but try to take them at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 80 mg once daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nasal passage inflammation, sore throat, nosebleed
  • Allergic reactions
  • High blood sugar levels (if you have diabetes, carefully monitor your blood sugar levels), increased creatine kinase levels in blood
  • Headache
  • Nausea, constipation, gas, indigestion, diarrhea
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, back pain
  • Abnormal liver function test results
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction: swelling of face, tongue, or throat, and difficulty breathing
  • Severe skin reactions: severe peeling or swelling of skin, blisters on skin, mouth, eyes, or genitals, with fever; pink-red patches on palms or soles
  • Muscle problems: muscle weakness, tenderness, pain, or rupture; reddish-brown urine (rhabdomyolysis), which can be life-threatening and lead to kidney damage
  • Liver problems: unexpected bleeding or bruising (may indicate liver issues, contact doctor immediately), hepatitis (liver inflammation), bile duct blockage (yellowing of skin and eyes)
  • Lupus-like syndrome: rash, joint pain, effects on blood cells
  • Loss of appetite, weight gain, low blood sugar levels
  • Nightmares, insomnia
  • Dizziness, numbness or tingling, reduced sensation, taste changes, memory loss
  • Visual disturbances (blurred vision, vision problems)
  • Ringing in the ears or head (tinnitus)
  • Vomiting, belching, stomach pain (upper and lower), inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
  • Skin rash, itching, hives, hair loss
  • Neck pain, muscle fatigue
  • Fatigue, malaise, weakness, chest pain, ankle swelling, fever
  • White blood cells in urine
  • Tendon injury
  • Lichenoid drug reaction: skin rash or mouth sores
  • Purplish skin lesions (vasculitis)
  • Hearing loss
  • Gynecomastia (enlarged breast tissue in men)
  • Persistent muscle weakness
  • Myasthenia gravis or ocular myasthenia (conditions causing muscle weakness)
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Depression
  • Breathing difficulties: persistent cough and/or shortness of breath or fever
  • Diabetes (more likely if you have high blood sugar, high fats, are overweight, or have high blood pressure)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to atorvastatin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have or have had liver disease, or if you have unexplained abnormal liver function test results.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, breastfeeding, or if you are a woman of childbearing age and not using reliable contraception.
  • Do not use if you are receiving treatment for Hepatitis C with the combination of glecaprevir and pibrentasvir.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have severe lung disease.

  • If you have used fusidic acid in the last 7 days, as the combination with Atorvastatin Accord can cause severe muscle problems.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have had repeated or unexplained muscle aches, pains, or weakness, or if you or family members have muscle conditions. Also tell your doctor if you have had muscle problems with other cholesterol-lowering medicines.
  • Avoid drinking large amounts of alcohol with this medicine.
  • Do not drink more than 1-2 small glasses of grapefruit juice per day, as large amounts can change how the medicine works.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have myasthenia (general muscle weakness) or ocular myasthenia (eye muscle weakness), as statins can sometimes worsen these conditions.
  • If you have diabetes or are at risk of developing diabetes, your doctor will monitor your condition closely.
