How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults and children aged 10 and older is 10 mg once a day. Your doctor may increase your dose until you reach the right one.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water. You can take them with or without food, at any time of day. Try to take them at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose of Atorvastatin Accord is 80 mg once a day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Inflammation of nasal passages, sore throat, nosebleed.
  • Allergic reactions.
  • High blood sugar levels (if you have diabetes, keep tracking your blood sugar carefully); high levels of creatine kinase in the blood.
  • Headache.
  • Nausea, constipation, gas, indigestion, diarrhea.
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, back pain.
  • Abnormal liver function test results.
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction causing swelling of the face, tongue, and throat, which may make breathing difficult. Stop tablets and contact doctor immediately or go to nearest hospital emergency room.
  • Severe skin reactions with peeling skin, swelling, blisters on skin, mouth, eyes, and genitals, and fever. Stop tablets and contact doctor immediately or go to nearest hospital emergency room.
  • Muscle weakness, tenderness, muscle pain or rupture, or reddish-brown urine. This could be a serious muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) that can be life-threatening and lead to kidney damage. Stop tablets and contact doctor immediately or go to nearest hospital emergency room.
  • Unexpected bleeding or bruising (may indicate liver problems).
  • Yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice).
  • Tendon injury.
  • Hearing loss.
  • Breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia).
  • Persistent muscle weakness.
  • Myasthenia gravis (general muscle weakness) or ocular myasthenia (muscle weakness in the eyes).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to atorvastatin or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have or have ever had liver problems or abnormal liver blood test results.
  • Women who can get pregnant must use reliable birth control while taking this medicine.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are using a combination of glecaprevir and pibrentasvir to treat hepatitis C.

  • Tell your doctor if you have a serious lung disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have taken fusidic acid (a medicine for bacterial infection) in the last 7 days, as combining it with Atorvastatin Accord can cause severe muscle problems. You may need to stop Atorvastatin Accord temporarily.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems or an underactive thyroid.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had repeated muscle aches or pains, or if you or a family member has had muscle problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you regularly drink a lot of alcohol.
  • Tell your doctor if you are over 70 years old.
  • Tell your doctor if you have myasthenia (general muscle weakness) or ocular myasthenia (muscle weakness in the eyes), as statins can sometimes worsen these conditions.
  • Avoid drinking large amounts of grapefruit juice (more than 1-2 small glasses a day), as it can affect this medicine.
  • If your doctor has told you that you have an intolerance to certain sugars (e.g., lactose), discuss this with your doctor before taking this medicine.
