How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults and children over 10 years old is 10 mg once daily. Your doctor may increase the dose as needed.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water. You can take them at any time of day, with or without food, but try to take them at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 80 mg once daily.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nasal inflammation, sore throat, nosebleeds
  • Allergic reactions
  • Increased blood sugar levels, increased creatine kinase levels in blood
  • Headache
  • Nausea, constipation, gas, indigestion, diarrhea
  • Joint pain, muscle pain, back pain
  • Abnormal liver function test results
RARE
  • Serious allergic reaction with swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, which can cause breathing difficulties.
  • Severe skin reaction with peeling skin, blisters, fever, and rash, especially on hands and feet.
  • Muscle weakness, tenderness, pain, or breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), possibly with dark urine, fever, and kidney damage.
  • Unexpected bleeding or bruising, which might indicate liver problems.
  • Lupus-like syndrome, including rash, joint pain, and effects on blood cells.
  • Loss of appetite, weight gain, decreased blood sugar levels
  • Nightmares, sleeplessness
  • Dizziness, numbness or tingling in fingers and toes, reduced sense of pain or touch, altered taste, memory loss
  • Blurred vision
  • Ringing in the ears and/or head
  • Vomiting, belching, upper and lower abdominal pain, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas causing stomach pain)
  • Hepatitis (liver inflammation)
  • Rash, itching, hives, hair loss
  • Neck pain, muscle fatigue
  • Tiredness, general unwell feeling, weakness, chest pain, swelling (especially in the ankles), fever
  • Positive white blood cell test in urine
  • Vision problems
  • Blockage of bile ducts (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes)
  • Tendon injury
  • Skin rash or mouth sores (lichenoid drug reaction), purple skin lesions (signs of blood vessel inflammation)
  • Sudden wheezing, chest pain or tightness, swelling of eyelids, face, lips, mouth, tongue or throat, trouble breathing, fainting.
  • Hearing loss
  • Gynecomastia (breast enlargement in men)
  • Persistent muscle weakness
  • Myasthenia gravis (a disease causing general muscle weakness, sometimes affecting breathing muscles) or ocular myasthenia (a disease causing eye muscle weakness).
  • Sexual difficulties
  • Depression
  • Breathing problems, including a persistent cough and/or shortness of breath or fever
  • Diabetes, more likely if you have high blood sugar and fat levels, are overweight, or have high blood pressure.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to Atorvastatin or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not use if you have liver problems or abnormal liver blood test results.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding. Women who can get pregnant must use reliable birth control.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking glecaprevir/pibrentasvir for hepatitis C.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have severe lung disease, kidney problems, an underactive thyroid, muscle pain or weakness, or if you drink a lot of alcohol.

  • Tell your doctor if you are taking fusidic acid (for bacterial infections), as combining them can cause severe muscle problems. You might need to stop this medicine temporarily.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have or have had myasthenia (general muscle weakness) or ocular myasthenia (eye muscle weakness), as statins can sometimes worsen these conditions.
  • Avoid large amounts of grapefruit juice (more than 1-2 small glasses per day) as it can change how the medicine works.
  • Avoid drinking a lot of alcohol with this medicine.
  • Be careful when driving or using machines if this medicine affects your ability to do so.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A
