How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 10 mg once a day for adults and children aged 10 and older.

Method

Swallow the tablet with a glass of water. You can take it with or without food, but try to take it at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 80 mg once a day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Inflammation in the nasal passages, sore throat, nosebleeds.
  • Allergic reactions.
  • Increased blood sugar levels, increased blood creatine kinase levels.
  • Headache.
  • Nausea, constipation, gas, indigestion, diarrhea.
  • Joint pain, joint swelling, muscle pain, muscle spasms, and back pain.
  • Abnormal blood test results for liver function.
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction causing swelling of the face, tongue, and throat, which can lead to severe breathing difficulties.
  • Severe skin condition with severe peeling and swelling of the skin, blisters on the skin, mouth, eyes, and genitals, along with fever.
  • Muscle weakness, tenderness, pain or rupture, or reddish-brown urine; these might be due to muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) which can lead to kidney problems.
  • Unexpected or unusual bleeding or bruising, fatigue, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, nausea, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), which may indicate liver problems.
  • Lupus-like symptoms (including rash, joint pain, and changes in blood cell counts).
  • Loss of appetite, weight gain, decreased blood sugar levels.
  • Nightmares, insomnia.
  • Dizziness, numbness or tingling in the fingers and toes, reduced sensation to pain or touch, changes in taste, memory impairment.
  • Blurred vision, vision disturbance.
  • Ringing in the ears and/or head.
  • Vomiting, belching, upper and lower abdominal pain, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).
  • Rash, itching, hives, hair loss.
  • Neck pain, muscle fatigue.
  • Fatigue, malaise, weakness, chest pain, swelling (especially in the ankles), fever, white blood cells in urine.
  • Tendon injury.
  • Purple skin lesions (signs of blood vessel inflammation).
  • Hearing loss.
  • Gynecomastia (enlargement of male breasts).
  • Persistent muscle weakness, Myasthenia gravis (general muscle weakness), Ocular myasthenia (eye muscle weakness).
  • Sexual dysfunction.
  • Depression.
  • Respiratory problems, such as persistent cough and/or shortness of breath or fever.
  • Diabetes (increased risk if you have high blood sugar, high blood fat levels, are overweight, and have high blood pressure).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to atorvastatin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have or have ever had liver disease or if your liver blood tests are abnormal and unexplained.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Also, if you are a woman who can become pregnant and are not using reliable contraception.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are using a combination of glecaprevir/pibrentasvir to treat Hepatitis C.
  • If you are taking or have taken fusidic acid (a medicine for bacterial infection) in the last 7 days, you must temporarily stop taking this medicine. Your doctor will tell you when it's safe to restart.

  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had myasthenia (a disease causing general muscle weakness) or ocular myasthenia (a disease causing eye muscle weakness), as statins can sometimes worsen these conditions.

Category A
