How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 10 mg once daily for adults and children aged 10 years and older; your doctor may adjust the dose as needed.

Method

Swallow the tablet with water. You can take it with or without food, but try to take it at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 80 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Inflammation in nasal passages, sore throat, nosebleeds.
  • Allergic reactions.
  • Increased blood sugar levels, increased creatine kinase levels in the blood.
  • Headache.
  • Nausea, constipation, gas, indigestion, diarrhea.
  • Joint pain, joint swelling, muscle pain, muscle twitching, and back pain.
  • Abnormal liver function test results.
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction causing swelling of the face, tongue, and throat, which can lead to severe breathing difficulties.
  • Severe skin reactions with peeling skin, swelling, blisters on skin, mouth, eyes, and genitals, plus fever.
  • Muscle weakness, tenderness, pain, or rupture, or reddish-brown urine, especially if you also feel unwell or have a high fever. This can be a sign of severe muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) and may lead to kidney problems.
  • Unexpected or unusual bleeding or bruising, fatigue, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, nausea, yellowing of skin or whites of eyes (signs of a liver problem).
  • Lupus-like symptoms (rash, joint pain, changes in blood cells).
  • Loss of appetite, weight gain, decreased blood sugar.
  • Nightmares, insomnia.
  • Dizziness, numbness or tingling, decreased sensitivity, altered taste, memory loss.
  • Blurred vision, other vision disturbances.
  • Ringing in the ears and/or head.
  • Vomiting, belching, abdominal pain (upper/lower), pancreatitis (inflammation of pancreas).
  • Hepatitis (liver inflammation).
  • Rash, itching, hives, hair loss.
  • Neck pain, muscle fatigue.
  • Fatigue, feeling unwell, weakness, chest pain, swelling (especially ankles), fever.
  • White blood cells in urine.
  • Blockage of bile ducts (yellowing of skin and whites of eyes).
  • Tendon injury.
  • Possible skin rash or mouth sores (lichenoid drug reaction).
  • Purple skin lesions (signs of blood vessel inflammation, i.e., vasculitis).
  • Hearing loss.
  • Gynecomastia (enlargement of breast tissue in men).
  • Persistent muscle weakness.
  • Myasthenia gravis (general muscle weakness, sometimes involving breathing muscles).
  • Ocular myasthenia (muscle weakness in the eyes).
  • Sexual dysfunction.
  • Depression.
  • Breathing problems (persistent cough, shortness of breath, or fever).
  • Diabetes (more likely if high blood sugar, high blood fat, overweight, high blood pressure).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to atorvastatin or any other ingredient.
  • If you have liver disease or abnormal liver blood tests.
  • If you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, breastfeeding, or could become pregnant and are not using reliable birth control.
  • If you are taking certain medicines for Hepatitis C (glecaprevir/pibrentasvir).
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe lung disease or kidney problems.

  • Tell your doctor if you have had a stroke with bleeding in the brain.
  • Tell your doctor if you have an underactive thyroid or recurring muscle aches or pains.
  • If you have muscle weakness that can be worsened by statins (myasthenia or ocular myasthenia).
  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • Avoid more than 1-2 small glasses of grapefruit juice per day, as it can affect how the medicine works.
  • If you need to take fusidic acid for a bacterial infection, you must temporarily stop taking Atorbir.

Category A
