How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose for adults is 50-100 mg per day.

Method

Take the tablet with enough liquid, such as a glass of water. You can take it on an empty stomach or with food, usually once a day or split into morning and evening doses.

Important

Maximum 100 mg per day, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle weakness
  • Cold and blue hands/feet
  • Dry mouth
  • Slow pulse
  • Sweating
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation
RARE
  • Sleep disorders
  • Reduced platelets (may cause bruising or nosebleeds)
  • Hallucinations, psychotic symptoms, confusion, depression, nightmares, or anxiety
  • Impotence
  • Vision problems or dry eyes
  • Skin reactions like rash, hair loss, or worsening psoriasis
  • Worsening heart failure or breathing difficulties (especially in asthmatics)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to atenolol or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe heart failure or a very slow heart rate (under 50 beats per minute).
  • Do not take if you have very low blood pressure (systolic pressure below 90 mmHg).
  • Do not take if you have severe lung disease, such as severe asthma or severe chronic bronchitis.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially MAO inhibitors, some pain relievers (floctafenine), or certain mental health medicines (sultopride).

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Significant adverse effects include bradycardia and orthostatic hypotension. Consider potential interactions especially with with drugs affecting the conduction system of the heart. (updated 20.1.2025)
