How to Use

Dosage

For adults with anxiety, take 25 ml daily, divided into three doses. For adults with itching, start with 12.5 ml once in the evening, then 3-4 times a day if needed. For children (over 12 months) with itching, take 0.5–1 ml per kg of body weight daily, divided into doses.

Method

Take the medicine using the measuring syringe. The syrup contains sugar, so rinse your mouth, especially in the evening.

Important

Maximum daily dose for adults and children over 40 kg is 50 ml. For elderly patients, the maximum is 25 ml per day. For children weighing 40 kg or less, the maximum is 1 ml per kg of body weight per day.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to hydroxyzine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have certain heart problems (like an irregular heartbeat, very slow heart rate) or heart disease.
  • Do not take if you have low salt levels in your body (e.g., potassium or magnesium).
  • Do not take if you are taking other medicines for heart rhythm problems or medicines that can affect your heart rhythm.
  • Do not take if a close family member has experienced sudden heart death.

  • Do not take if you have porphyria (a rare blood disorder).
  • Do not take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Stop taking Atarax 5 days before allergy tests.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking Atarax, as it can make alcohol's effects stronger.
  • This medicine can make you sleepy and affect your ability to react and concentrate. Do not drive or operate machinery.
  • Atarax syrup contains sugar, which can be bad for teeth and, in large doses, for people with diabetes.
  • If you experience heart symptoms like palpitations, breathing difficulties, or fainting while taking Atarax, stop taking it and seek medical help immediately.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. A long-acting. Do not use as a hypnotic or sedative. Increases risk for QT prolongation. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Significant adverse effects include tachycardia, confusion and cognitive impairment. Increases risk of falls. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. (updated 15.1.2024)
