How to Use

Dosage

For high blood pressure, the usual starting dose for adults is 8 mg once daily. For heart failure, it's 4 mg once daily. Your doctor might adjust it.

Method

Take the tablet with water, with or without food, at the same time each day to help you remember.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 32 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling dizzy or a spinning sensation.
  • Headache.
  • Respiratory infection.
  • Low blood pressure, which might make you feel weak or dizzy.
  • High potassium levels in your blood, especially if you have kidney or heart failure. This can cause tiredness, weakness, irregular heartbeat, or tingling.
  • Changes in kidney function, especially if you have existing kidney problems or heart failure. In very rare cases, this can lead to kidney failure.
RARE
  • Swelling in your intestines (guts) with symptoms like stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
  • Decrease in red or white blood cells, which can make you feel tired, prone to infections, or have a fever.
  • Skin rash, itchy lumpy rash (hives).
  • Itching.
  • Back pain, joint pain, and muscle pain.
  • Changes in liver function, including liver inflammation (hepatitis). You might feel tired, have yellow skin and eyes, and flu-like symptoms.
  • Nausea.
  • Low sodium levels in your blood. If severe, this can cause weakness, lack of energy, or muscle cramps.
  • Cough.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Atacand if you are allergic to candesartan cilexetil or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take Atacand if you are pregnant for more than 3 months, or planning to become pregnant.
  • Do not take Atacand if you have severe liver problems or a blocked bile duct (problem with bile drainage).
  • Do not give Atacand to children under 1 year old.
  • Do not take Atacand if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking another blood pressure medicine called aliskiren.

  • If you have trouble breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or severe itchy skin with rash, stop taking Atacand and get medical help right away.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Monitor renal function and potassium concentrations during the pharmacotherapy. Avoid concurrent use of NSAIDs. (updated 14.4.2025)
