Aspirin 500 mg tablets contain acetylsalicylic acid and are used to relieve pain, reduce fever, and treat menstrual pain and rheumatic diseases.

How to Use

Dosage

Adults and those over 16 years: 1-2 tablets at a time, up to 3 times a day, with at least 4 hours between doses. For 12-15-year-olds: 1 tablet at a time, up to 3 times a day, with at least 4 hours between doses.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with plenty of water, preferably with a meal.

Important

Maximum of 8 tablets (4000 mg) per day for adults and those over 16 years. For 12-15-year-olds, maximum of 3 tablets (1500 mg) per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Digestive issues, such as stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting.
  • Wounds may bleed longer, and bleeding can cause iron deficiency.
  • Allergic skin rashes or runny nose.
RARE
  • Inflammation and ulcers in the digestive tract.
  • Bleeding or perforation in the digestive tract.
  • Severe allergic reactions or severe skin reactions.
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in blood tests.
  • Low blood sugar.
  • Low platelet count.
  • Breakdown of red blood cells (hemolysis) in patients with severe glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency.
  • Kidney problems and sudden kidney failure.
  • Worsening of breathing problems caused by aspirin.
  • Increased swelling in heart failure.
  • Narrowing of the intestines (with long-term use).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to acetylsalicylic acid or similar pain relievers.
  • Do not use if you have had an asthma attack caused by aspirin or similar medicines.
  • Do not use if you have a tendency to bleed, such as low platelet count or a bleeding disorder.
  • Do not use if you have or have had a stomach or duodenal ulcer.
  • Do not use if you have severe kidney, liver, or heart failure.

  • Do not use during the last three months of pregnancy.
  • Do not give to children or adolescents with viral infections (like flu or chickenpox) without a doctor's advice, as it may cause a rare but serious condition called Reye's syndrome.
  • Avoid alcohol, as it can increase the risk of stomach bleeding.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are taking blood thinners, as Aspirin can increase their effects.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Not suitable for use as analgesic or antipyretic medication. Increases swelling, worsens renal and heart failure and causes cardiovascular events. Increases risk of bleeding, especially in the gastrointestinal tract. Consider potential interactions especially with preparations that increase risk of bleeding. Consider acetylsalicylic acid in OTC drugs and combination products. (updated 24.3.2025)
