How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 0.5 to 1.0 grams of ascorbic acid. For severe injuries or surgeries, higher daily doses of at least 3 grams may be needed, up to a maximum of 7.5 grams per day for infusions.

Method

This medicine is given slowly into a vein as an injection or infusion by a doctor or nurse. It must be diluted before use.

Important

For pregnant or breastfeeding mothers, the daily dose should not exceed 100-500 mg. For other patients, daily doses can go up to 7.5g for infusions depending on the condition.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Breathing issues like shortness of breath.
  • Skin reactions like rash, hives, or itching.
  • Temporary blood circulation problems like dizziness, nausea, headache, or vision problems.
  • Reactions in patients with acute infections, such as chills and fever.
  • Digestive problems like nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  • Kidney stones made of calcium oxalate.
  • Increased urination.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to vitamin C or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have kidney or bladder stones, or too much oxalate in your urine.
  • Do not use if you have too much iron in your body (e.g., thalassemia, hemochromatosis, sideroblastic anemia, or have received a red blood cell transfusion).
  • Do not use if you have severe kidney problems.
  • Do not use if you have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (a genetic blood disorder affecting red blood cells).

  • Be careful if you are on a low-salt diet, as this medicine contains a lot of sodium.
  • If you have had breathing problems (like asthma) before, tell your doctor; they may start you on a lower dose.
  • This medicine can affect certain lab test results (like blood sugar, uric acid, creatinine); tell your doctor if you need tests, as you may need to stop taking vitamin C 24 hours beforehand.
  • If you have diabetes, this medicine can affect your blood sugar readings.
  • To help prevent kidney stones, avoid foods high in oxalate (like rhubarb, spinach, and beetroot).
  • If you have a history of recurring kidney stones, do not take more than 100-200 mg of vitamin C per day to avoid more calcium oxalate stones.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding due to the high vitamin C content in this medicine.
