How to Use

Dosage

Use one Asacol 1 g suppository once a day before going to bed.

Method

Insert the medicine into your rectum through your anus. Do NOT swallow it.

Important

Do not use more than one Asacol 1 g suppository per day.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Stomach pain, diarrhea, gas, nausea, vomiting, constipation.
  • Headache, dizziness.
  • Chest pain, shortness of breath, or swelling in your arms/legs due to heart issues.
  • Increased skin sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Changes in kidney function, sometimes with swelling in your arms/legs or pain in your side.
  • Severe stomach pain from sudden inflammation of the pancreas.
  • Fever, sore throat, or feeling unwell due to changes in blood count.
  • Shortness of breath, cough, wheezing, or shadows on lung X-ray (due to allergic or inflammatory lung condition).
  • Severe diarrhea and stomach pain due to an allergic reaction in the gut caused by this medicine.
  • Rash or skin inflammation.
  • Muscle and joint pain.
  • Yellow skin (jaundice) or stomach pain due to liver disease or blocked bile ducts.
  • Hair loss and baldness.
  • Numbness and tingling in hands and feet (nerve damage).
  • Temporary decrease in sperm production.
  • Kidney stones and related kidney pain.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to mesalazine, salicylic acid, aspirin, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had lung problems, especially asthma.
  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to sulfasalazine, which is a medicine similar to mesalazine.
  • Stop using this medicine and contact a doctor immediately if you get a severe rash, peeling skin, blisters, mouth sores, or fever after using it.

  • Contact your doctor immediately if you have severe or repeated headaches, vision problems, or ringing/buzzing in your ears.
  • If you feel much worse (especially with fever and a sore throat), stop using this medicine and contact a doctor immediately.
  • Mesalazine can cause kidney stones. Drink enough fluids while taking this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Consider renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Remember blood tests to monitor safety. (updated 20.5.2024)
