How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual dose is 15 mg once a day. For youth (13-17 years), the recommended dose is usually 10 mg once a day. Your doctor may adjust your dose.

Method

Take your tablet whole with water, at the same time each day. You can take it with or without food. Do not stop taking it without talking to your doctor.

Important

The maximum daily dose for both adults and youth is 30 mg once a day.

  • Feeling restless and unable to sit still (akathisia)
  • Uncontrolled movements (jerking, twitching, or writhing)
  • Shaking (tremor)

  • Infrequent or difficult bowel movements (constipation)
  • Upset stomach
  • Nausea
  • More saliva than usual

RARE
  • Changes in blood levels of prolactin (a hormone)
  • High blood sugar
  • Depression
  • Changed or increased sexual desire
  • Uncontrolled movements of the mouth, tongue, arms, and legs (tardive dyskinesia)
  • Muscle disorder causing twisting movements (dystonia)
  • Restless legs
  • Double vision
  • Sensitivity to light (eyes)
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Dizziness or fainting when standing up (due to low blood pressure)
  • Hiccups

Important Warnings

  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have thoughts or feelings of harming yourself.
  • Inform your doctor if you have high blood sugar, increased thirst, or a family history of diabetes.
  • Inform your doctor if you have a history of seizures.
  • Inform your doctor if you have involuntary muscle movements, especially in your face.
  • Inform your doctor if you have heart or blood vessel problems, a history of stroke, or unusual blood pressure.

  • Inform your doctor if you or your family have a history of blood clots.
  • Tell your doctor if you have strong, uncontrollable urges to gamble, overeat, spend excessively, or have increased sexual thoughts.
  • Tell your doctor if you experience weight gain, new movement problems, severe drowsiness, difficulty swallowing, or allergic reactions.
  • If you are an elderly patient with dementia (memory problems), tell your doctor if you have ever had a stroke or mini-stroke.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience muscle stiffness, high fever, sweating, changes in alertness, or a very fast or irregular heartbeat.
  • This medicine can cause sleepiness, dizziness, and problems with movement or balance, which may lead to falls. Be careful, especially if you are elderly or frail.
  • This medicine should not be used in children under 13 years of age.
