How to Use

Dosage

Adults usually take 15 mg once a day. Teenagers (13 years and older) usually start with 10 mg once a day. Your doctor might change your dose.

Method

Take the tablet whole with water at the same time each day, with or without food.

Important

Do not take more than 30 mg in one day.

  • Uncontrolled twitching, jerking, or wriggling movements

  • Blurred vision
  • Constipation or difficulty passing stool
  • Indigestion
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • More saliva in your mouth than usual
  • Vomiting (being sick)
RARE
  • Changes in blood prolactin levels (a hormone)
  • Depression
  • Changed or increased sexual desire
  • Uncontrolled movements of the mouth, tongue, arms, and legs (tardive dyskinesia)
  • Muscle stiffness and twisting movements (dystonia)
  • Restless legs
  • Seeing double
  • Eyes sensitive to light
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Dizziness or fainting when standing up due to a drop in blood pressure
  • Hiccups
  • Low white blood cell count
  • Low platelet count (cells that help blood clot)
  • Allergic reactions (e.g., swelling of the mouth, tongue, face, or throat, itching, rash)
  • New or worse diabetes, ketoacidosis (too many ketones in blood/urine), or coma
  • Low sodium in the blood
  • Loss of appetite (anorexia)
  • Weight loss or weight gain
  • Thoughts or attempts of suicide
  • Aggressiveness or agitation
  • A serious condition called Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (symptoms: fever, stiff muscles, fast breathing, sweating, confusion, and sudden changes in blood pressure and heart rate)
  • Seizures (fits)
  • Serotonin syndrome (symptoms: feeling intensely happy, sleepy, clumsy, restless, drunk-like, fever, sweating, or stiff muscles)
  • Speech problems
  • Eyes fixed in one position
  • Sudden unexplained death
  • Life-threatening irregular heartbeat or heart attack
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Blood clots in veins, especially in the legs (swelling, pain, redness) which can travel to the lungs (chest pain, breathing issues). Seek medical help immediately if you have these symptoms.
  • High blood pressure
  • Fainting
  • Food accidentally going into the windpipe, risking lung infection
  • Muscle spasms around the voice box
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach or abdominal discomfort
  • Liver failure or inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Abnormal liver test results
  • Skin rash or sensitivity to light
  • Hair loss
  • Excessive sweating
  • Severe allergic reactions like DRESS syndrome (flu-like symptoms, rash on face then body, high fever, swollen lymph nodes, abnormal blood tests)
  • Abnormal muscle breakdown that can cause kidney problems
  • Muscle pain or stiffness
  • Involuntary urination (incontinence) or difficulty urinating
  • Withdrawal symptoms in newborns if the mother took the medicine during pregnancy
  • Long-lasting and/or painful erection
  • Body temperature control problems (e.g., fever)
  • Chest pain
  • Swelling of hands, ankles, or feet
  • Inability to resist harmful urges like gambling, increased sexual interest, uncontrolled spending, binge eating, or wandering

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to aripiprazole or any of its ingredients.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you think about hurting yourself or committing suicide.
  • Tell your doctor if you have high blood sugar or if diabetes runs in your family.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had seizures (fits).
  • Tell your doctor if you have uncontrolled or unusual muscle movements, especially in your face.

  • Tell your doctor if you have heart or blood vessel problems, a history of stroke, or unusual blood pressure.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your family have a history of blood clots.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of problem gambling or other issues with not being able to control your urges.
  • This medicine can make you feel sleepy, dizzy, and affect your balance, which could lead to falls. Be careful, especially if you are older or frail.
  • Get medical help right away if you have stiff muscles or cramps with high fever, sweating, confusion, or a very fast or irregular heartbeat.
  • Children under 13 years old should not use this medicine.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a baby, talk to your doctor before using this medicine.
