How to Use

Dosage

Typically, adults take 15 mg once a day. Your doctor might adjust your dose, and the recommended starting dose for young people is 10 mg once a day.

Method

Take the tablet by mouth with water, whole, with or without food. Try to take your medicine at the same time each day. Do not stop taking or change your dose without talking to your doctor first.

Important

The maximum dose is 30 mg once a day.

  • Restless legs
  • Double vision
  • Sensitivity to light (eyes)
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting when standing up (due to low blood pressure)
  • Hiccups
  • Low white blood cell count
  • Low platelet count
  • Allergic reaction (e.g., swelling of mouth, tongue, face or throat, itching, rash)
  • New or worsening diabetes, high acid levels in blood (ketoacidosis), or coma
  • Very high blood sugar
  • Low sodium in blood
  • Loss of appetite (anorexia)
  • Weight loss
  • Weight gain
  • Suicidal thoughts, attempts, and suicide
  • Aggressiveness
  • Agitation
  • Nervousness
  • Serious reaction with fever, stiff muscles, fast breathing, sweating, confusion, and changes in blood pressure/heart rate (neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
  • Seizures
  • Serotonin syndrome (feelings of happiness, drowsiness, clumsiness, restlessness, feeling drunk, fever, sweating, or stiff muscles)
  • Speech problems
  • Eyes stuck in one position
  • Sudden unexplained death
  • Life-threatening irregular heartbeat
  • Heart attack
  • Slowed heartbeat
  • Blood clots in veins, especially in legs (swelling, pain, redness), potentially moving to lungs (chest pain, breathing difficulties)
  • High blood pressure
  • Fainting
  • Food accidentally entering the windpipe, risking pneumonia
  • Muscle spasms around the vocal cords
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach discomfort
  • Liver failure
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Abnormal liver function tests
  • Rash
  • Sensitivity of skin to light
  • Hair loss
  • Excessive sweating
  • Severe allergic reactions, including DRESS (fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, organ inflammation)
  • Abnormal muscle breakdown, potentially causing kidney problems

  • Involuntary urination (incontinence)
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Withdrawal symptoms in newborns if exposed to the medicine during pregnancy
  • Long-lasting and/or painful erection
  • Problems regulating body temperature or fever

  • Swelling of hands, ankles, or feet
  • Blood tests: changing or increasing blood sugar levels, increased HbA1c
  • Inability to resist urges that could be harmful, such as excessive gambling, increased sexual urges, uncontrollable shopping, binge eating, or compulsive wandering

Important Warnings

  • If you are allergic to aripiprazole or any other ingredient in this medicine, do not take it.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself, tell your doctor right away.
  • Tell your doctor if you have high blood sugar, diabetes, seizures, unusual muscle movements, heart problems, stroke, blood clots, or a history of excessive gambling.
  • Report weight gain, movement problems, drowsiness, trouble swallowing, or allergic reactions to your doctor.
  • If you are elderly and have dementia, tell your doctor about any history of stroke or mini-stroke.

  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience stiff muscles, high fever, sweating, confusion, or a very fast heartbeat.
  • Tell your doctor if you develop strong urges to gamble, overeat, overspend, or have increased sexual urges that are hard to control.
  • This medicine can cause drowsiness, dizziness, and falls, especially if you are elderly or frail. Be careful.
  • Do not use this medicine for children under 15 years old.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a family, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness and vision problems, so be careful when driving or using machines.
